Oh Blimey, I'm Such A Twit **

It's quite nice, when good and pleasing things happen to be able to put them on the blog. And now I'm into photography, to be able to add pictures of those good and pleasing things is a bonus. When the blog books are viewed in years to come, family members and friends might smile at achievements, and even (hopefully) admire my images. So ... I think it only fair to present a 'balanced' view of life, and also note when things don't go quite so well.

I once wrote a blog post called 'Driving Miss Maisie' which was about me and my experience of driving (and learning to drive), but which also introduced my readers to Maisie, my fabulous little car. She's not posh or anything, but she is lovely. In my June Round Up of last year, I also posted a picture of Maisie (well, a bit of her) when she'd been valeted and looked gorgeous and shiny.

Poor old Maisie isn't looking at her best at the moment. :-(

I'd like to be able to tell you it was all the fault of some horrid anonymous other. To tell you that said other wasn't looking where they were going and was driving in a totally inappropriate manner. To tell you that this wasn't my fault at all, and that I was the victim of circumstance. But I can't. Well, I could, but I'd be lying, and then I'd get big white spots on my tongue (at least that's what Grandma C said would happen if I lied).

I'll tell you what actually happened if you promise not to laugh. Do you promise? You haven't got your finger crossed behind your back have you? So the promise doesn't really count? Hmmmm. OK then.

What actually happened was that I'd dropped the kids off at school and thought I'd be very efficient and nip into Waitrose on my way home, to get a few bits. I drove into the car park and picked my parking space - over in the corner, between the black VW Golf, and one of those 'trolley bays' where people put their trolleys for the young man to collect later and take back to the front of the shop. I reversed in, as I always do. But I didn't do it very well. :-(

Total understatement of the year ... I more than didn't do it very well. I totally cocked it up! Those iron railings they've got round those trolley bays are really, really strong! 'Was the fence moving very fast?' asked one of my friends when I told him what had happened? *blush* Erm, no ... it wasn't. I was so very cross with myself - what a stupid thing to do. In my defence, I had been ill all week with one of those feverish, achey viruses, and really wasn't feeling at all 'right'. I've been driving for over 20 years and this is the first time I've done something like this.

Anyway, I came home and burst into tears (like you do). It was one of those times when I wished I wasn't doing 'life' alone. I wished there were a lovely man here to put his arms round me, comfort me, and tell me not to worry - that it was an accident, and he'd help me sort it out. But of course that's not how it is.

So, once I'd stopped being angry with myself and calmed down a bit, I did what any sane woman would do: I baked. I baked vanilla biscuits and flapjacks, because as we all understand, that would help. It didn't help with the car, but it helped with me. When a couple of days had passed, I rang a local car body repair place and a nice man looked Maisie over. He said I need a new door and a new sill and lots of paintwork 'doing'. He sent me a letter telling me how much he would like me to give him to do the work. After I'd picked myself up off the floor, I called my Insurance Company and said 'help!'

The insurance company sent a different nice man to look Maisie over. He said she needs TWO new doors and if it's a high grade steel job, she might even be a write off, given that she's several years old, and a Toyota (the value of which make of car has plummeted badly in recent weeks.) :( Oh flipping heck. I'm waiting to hear from the insurance company now as to what they're going to do - to repair or not to repair; that is the question. Whilst I am able to think it is probably a good job I tangled with the metal railings rather than the black VW Golf. And that I was on my own so the kids weren't upset by witnessing the accident. And that nobody was hurt; I still feel a total numpty, and cannot believe how much hassle this has all caused. Tsk.

You're so funny! Sorry about the accident...
--Bravo on the baking! Excellent call -- the ONLY way to sooth the nerves!
--You never know about the going-it-alone. It could very well be a blessing -- you might be over-romanticizing the event. It could happen that you come home to tell "him" about it and he yells at you and calls you that name with the other vowel in it? Count your blessings LOL!
--I'm thinking it probably wasn't your fault at all. The gas pedal probably got stuck and lurched the car into those metal rails. That IS after all why they have a recall!
--Oh, and hubby always told me not to park next to those trolley thingies 'cause it's too easy for people to slam their carts into the thingy and miss, thereby hitting your car!

I hope you're having a MUCH better weekend!

Oh dear, I hate it when things like that happen. At least you did the sane thing and went home and did some baking. It is very cathartic isn't it? These things happen all the time so don't worry about it. Just hope you get your car sorted out soon one way or the other.

Oh dear, what a mess! I say be grateful that you were the cause of the incident and not someone else. Remember my lovely car got crumped by a lorry driver? Well it's nearly a year since that happened and I'm still trying to get it sorted out. My insurance company have coughed up the cash but his insurance company are arguing the toss over my 'uninsured losses' ie my excess and the replacement vehicle I was given. They want to know why I needed a replacement - because their client crumped my parked car - doh! Turns out I may have to traipse up to the Midlands to appear in Court, and, get this, he's the Defendent!!
Much as I love Mr Earplugs, it's always better to sort these things out yourself! Hope Maisie's back on the road soon.

Definitely can't be your fault, what with Maisie being a (whispers)Toyota and all.

Funny thing about baking as a stress release. I remember years ago baking a series of cakes while hopping around the kitchen as the night before I had managed to (not then diagnosed) a cruciate ligament.

BTW I think it is a big black spot on the tongue ;-)

o Kitty what a shame - but i do know how you feel, i once had an argument with a gate post - not only that but it was at my local stables and everyone seemed to be watching!!!

I had an accident in a Waitrose car park. I think they do it on purpose by laying in wait for Toyota drivers. Obviously some grudge.

Think of your little contretemps as providing people with jobs. I think that is very laudable and you should be congratulated. Suggest to the insurance company that they ought to lower your premium in appreciation of your attempts to kick-start the local economy.

Thank you for helping kick start the local economy. Expect an invitation soon.

Listen Kitty, like you said, everybody's safe, and that's all that matters. Hope Maisie's ok too, in the end.

Argh, sympathies. If it makes you feel better I have argued with both a fence post and a wall and the car came off worst both times. It's only a car - I'm glad you're OK.

Actually, my story may not make you feel better, it just might make you glad you live nowhere near me ;-)

Oh dear... it's good to hear everyboddy is alright. And Maisie will be to, I guess?
Something like this happened to me once.( that's why I don't want a shiny new car... as long as it drives it's ok)

It is only a car and you are okay which is the important thing. I've managed similar silly things each time I was pregnant. The first time I left my bumper round a lampost! I blamed hormones which seemed to totally mess with my spatial awareness!

when things like this happen, they have a huge impact on the way that they make you feel. Thankfully, you are OK - which is the main thing. I hope the insurance company have goof news for you.

Oh you poor thing ! Of course the baking helps , baking helps almost everything ! Heres hoping this week is much better for you .

sharon said...

The most important thing is that you are ok. Shaken, but not stirred ;-)

If the value of Toyotas has gone down so much you should be able to pick up another one cheaply if indeed your car is written off. Another option would be to obtain secondhand doors from a scrapyard and then it's only a paint job.

Hope you get your car sorted out, glad you are ok! I went for a job interview at a garden centre a couple of years ago, came out and reversed straight into their fence knocking some of it down i then had to go in and explain what had happened...i didn't get the job xx

If it's any consolation I ran my truck into a perfectly immobile tractor on a snowy road about a month ago. And a few years ago I backed into a stationary tree which was VERY visible. We all make mistakes. At least you've got insurance to help with the cost.

How many times have I done this? HUH? three.

Now, a person who does it one time and isn't more careful... that's one thing. A person who does it twice and hasn't learned... that's a major git!

I was much younger. And thankfully, I'm now insured...

Oh Kitty..so sorry to hear about your car...Blame it on spring fever. I watched 2 ladies reverse straight into each other right in front of my car on Friday during the school run!

Looking at the comments..you aren't alone.

Sending you a big (((Bear HUG)))

You are not a twit! you are just human! Every wednesday I go to a small sewng group which meets in a little church hall. Been going there for years, but on one ocassion (for reasons i can not explain) I mis-judged the narrow gate opening and managed to scrap the passenger side of the car and half rip off the door trim on the wrought iron gates. Time and time again I have been through those gaets whichout a single hitch, then........... Again, twenty plus years of driving and that was the first time I damaged my own car and not had some other "twit" damage it for me. Now there is another tale or two as well.
Do not worry about it, cars can be fixed and you are ok.
Another notch to experience.

Aww don't worry about it. When I was pregnant I was away with the fairies and managed to prang my car in Matalans card park twice in the space of a month. I actually set off and drove straight into a fence and then reversed into someone - doh !!

Oh dear - poor you Kitty and poor Maisie. Hope she is able to undergo the necessary to bring her back to full strength again. I had a similar experience, many years ago. I had been to the doctor, suffering with tonsillitis and was feeling decidedly below par. Had parked my car in the local town whilst I popped to the chemist before going home to go to bed. Back at the car I started the engine, not realising I had left it in reverse gear. Bang - straight back into the car parked behind me. I hesitated for a moment then got out and left a note on the windscreen with my telephone number. Got a call about 1 hour later. "No damage to my car" said a very nice man, "but it looks as you might have some" (there was tell tale red paint on his bumper). I agreed, It cost me about £100!

Baking was exactly the right move. What else could you have done. Sorry to hear about the accident thoug and I hope it all works out for the best.

oh Kitty! The main thing is that you are ok. What a pain, my neighbour had a prang last week and came in for a cup of tea as she was very emotional too, its the shock I think. But you are much better - I didn't bake any delicious goodies!
Hope your car get better soon

Exchange a vowel??? What's a "twet"??? Glad nobody was hurt. As far as accidents go... sometimes that's just what happens during life no point beating yourself up over it. I do hope the insurance works out in your favor.

Hi Kitty ,

I thought about you today. Last night at 3am Hubby was up as the eldest child was leaving the house rather noisily with friends. He is 19 and drives and so does the middle child who is 17. The middle child has spent 2 years of working from14years to buy his first car, a VW Jetta. He is so darn proud of his car. last night at 3am the eldest reversed down the drive way straight into the side of the Jetta. He then pulled forward, reversed and did the same again!!!!!

I felt so sorry for the middle child. The first day he had the car the EC took it for a spin and clipped the underneaath on a driveway and cracked a part of the bumper. Now this!

What am I going to do with them Kitty!

Oh dear... I did this as a teenager pulling out of my mother's car park in her new Mustang GT. Pulled out, round, and heard the screeeeech as I veered left. I still remember trying to put it back in the car park to let her think she did it herself. It didn't work...
