Brrrrrrrrrr!

I'm sure bloggers overseas are getting a bit bored with reading about the snow in the UK, so if you're bored of snow, just click on somewhere else straight away: This is a snowy post!

Before the big snowfall of February last year my kids had never really seen a good, big amount of snow. I know it's easy for us to look back and imagine things in our childhood, but seeing that snow last February reminded me of how winters used to be when I was a kid - lots of mucky grey/brown snow piled up at the sides of the roads, and snow on the ground for a good week or more per snowfall.

As an adult, I find the snow picturesque, but completely impractical, especially living where we do now. At least where we were before, there was a corner shop within walking distance. Here, we have to get into town to shop and at the moment the area in front of our house, where we park car(s) is like an ice rink. This morning I have witnessed two vehicles get out, so perhaps it is getting better?

When, on Tuesday, I heard the weather warning for Wednesday, I nipped into town and stocked up on the basics. Good job too, since the snow started on Tuesday afternoon and didn't stop for well over 24 hours.

My kids went back to school on Monday but only did two days - the local schools being closed since Wednesday. Some friends of mine whose children were due to go back on Wednesday haven't returned to school since their Christmas break.

I confess that on Wednesday I didn't go out at all. Our lovely neighbour 'G' played at snowball fights with his girls and No.2, whilst No.1 and I snuggled down under a blanket and watched 'The Revenge of the Pink Panther'.

Yesterday No.2 and I ventured out to post a birthday card. We didn't see a single car on the roads, but lots of people were crunching through crisp snow; many of them pulling a child on a sledge behind them.

This morning we were out in the garden building a snowman. May I introduce Sir Percival Frost-Trotter:

I think he has the look of Worzel Gummidge about him? He has a grand name, which is what happens when you decide a name by 'committee'. I thought he deserved a title, No.2 thought him a real Percival, and No.1 dreamt up the double barrelled bit. He appears to have nipples made of stone - what can I say other than No.2 thought it was funny. Tsk.

I'm hoping the Tesco delivery man is able to get to me for my planned delivery tomorrow. If he doesn't I'm going to have to try to get out, and if I'm honest, I'm scared of driving in snow and ice. :(

According to the Met Office website, at least at the time of writing, we will get more snow every day until at least Tuesday. The temperature is due to rise to 0°C by then, so perhaps it will all start to melt? Last night we watched the lady on the weather forecast tell us that with the wind chill factor, it would be around -17°C. My toes are very cold.

The one good thing about the snow is that it makes for pretty photos - I think I've got about 50 of them since Wednesday. In my humble opinion, the ones of ice look nice in good old Black & White.

But now I've got some pictures, and the kids have had some snow days, I'd quite like it to go away. Please.

EDITED TO ADD: Mr Tesco has just been. He brought absolutely everything I ordered, along with two very friendly operatives. So we are now all set for the next few days of snow that have been forecast.

I'm so sorry you're just about snowed in! Did the Tesco man arrive? I love Percival. And I didn't even KNOW about the changable head guy! There really are people named Pertwee!

Your pictures, however, make the snow and ice look like a fairyland. I love those berries!

Fab pics!!! I want to try and get as many as possible to use as Christmas Cards next year!!! I only said today actually that if this snow keeps appearing each year we may have to invest in a 4 x 4 instead of a sports car!! I do like it but not when it prevents me from getting to work which it has done this week...Doh!!! xx

Such beautiful pictures Kitty - but I don't envy you one little bit. I can remember being snowed in and I hated it. Even the boys got fed up with it after a couple of days.

Hope it thaws out soon ;-)

Great photos!
In terms of snow you're still amateurs, though ;)
In Slovenia it started snowing on Monday and it snowed straight through Wednesday, it stopped on Thursday and it snowed from the early morning to late at night yesterday like it was the end of the world and universe and everything just had to come and settle down on earth in one day. From 3pm to 11pm we got around 6cm on new snow! I could measure it because hubby cleaned our front yard (for the 5th time this week, sheesh) and I just came back, on foot, from orchestra practice (concert today).
I hoped that it would stop for today, so my parents could drive the 120 km that divide us (they already have tickets), but I just checked the radar picture and it looks like we're getting another package. And not a small one either. We'll see how it turns out until this afternoon (no choice, is there?).

Love the snowman! Great pictures too...especially of the ice.

I remember walking to school in snow like this (in Lancashire). Our school only closed if the boiler broke down so we never had any extra days off. Poor Miss Muffett walked most of the way to school (nearly 3 miles) before finding out that the school was shut - I discovered she can swear like a navvy! Don't hold your breath for the shopping - Tesco cancelled our order, no re-scheduling or anything, just cancelled! Mr Earplugs dug out the car and made it to Sainsbury's but it was absolutely heaving with people shopping as if the world was coming to an end!

Sir Percival Frost-Trotter's hair is very impressive:)
I must say I'm glad you mentioned his nipples as I did wonder about them!
Now the Tescos man has been I hope you enjoy the next few days holed up.

Good old Tescos!! Glad they made it to your door.

It has been a funny week and I've driven every day of it! My Dh went out in it for the first time in 3 days (he's been working from home) and couldn't believe how bad the roads and driving is...I have been saying as much most of the week but I don't think he's been listening to me! LOL

here today, gone tomorrow said...

Lovely photos!

It does seem like snow doesn't come as often or last as long or stay as pretty as it did when I was a kid. And do kids sled anymore??

And, although I'll take cold weather over hot any day, even a polar bear like me is a little weary of it all...

Moogsmum said...

Utterly gorgeous photos, Kitty - especially the icy black and whites.

Great nipples, Percy!

You really did have it cold up there, didn't you? South Today verified your -17. Time to crack open the sock monkey sock stash and put a few more pairs on!

Keep warm :o)

Ahh snow, does it shut down the UK for a week for a few inches like it does in the US down south?

Great. My son in law is a top class photographer and much of his stuff is black and white. Went to football Saturday afternoon. Wore pants vest scarf long coms trousers shirt jumper another jumper hat gloves socks boots jacket and was still frozen!

I have to award you with the best snow man in blogland, fantastic.

I'm glad your tescos man came! Your pictures are very pretty, we haven't had quite as much snow here but I would like the ice especially to go now too
: )

we've had snow here just about every day since December 17th , some days a lot of it melts but then it all comes back again the day after. Yesterday was -10 whereas today its 4 but because of the wind it seems so much colder... glad the Tesco man got there and I love your pics

We did live with some cold & snow in Christchurch, but never to that degree!!

Hi
An experiment. Hope you dont mind me sending people to your excellent blog on the 16 January.
Mind you, you may not even notice if you have 'extra', your blog is so busy, and deservedly so.

Hi Chris. Do you know, I think it's beginning to think about melting. Not much, but a bit, which is good. Very, very good! x

Hi DC - Thank you. Mr Tesco did his job beautifully, though we were stuck for milk this week when the snow came again :( x

Hi Ginny - Thank you x

Hi Mr Cat - Sir Winnie is your 15th cousin? :-O x

Hi WW - Is it starting to go in your parts? Today the air feels different to me, and I can see it starting to melt from people's rooftops. I am encouraged. x

Hello Mrs Trash - Thank you. x

Hi Twiggy - Thank you, yes - not every aristocratic snowman has a nipples and tie, you know! Hope Mr Tesco got to you. x

Hello Sal - Thank you! And about those Winter draw(ers) ... they're on ;-) x

Hi Andrea - lovely to 'see' you. That's a great idea actually, I'm not sure if any of mine are good enough for Crimble cards. Hmmm, will ponder on it. Let's hope this year's snow is a one-off and not a sign of things to come :( x

Hi Alexandra. Hooray for Mr Tesco. I did hear of a Waitrose delivery lorry having to be rescued from the bottom of a hill; I think they did a valiant job really. x

Kitty said...

Hi Pesky - I must email you. I have tried to get into your blog, but can't. Don't know what the problem is? :( x

Hi Anna - Thank you. I don't mind it looking beautiful for a day or two, but this last 10 days has been a bit of a hassle. Take care. x

Hello lovely Sharon. Thank you. It's weird isn't it? Being snowed in ... I mean you might not have gone out anyway, but knowing you CAN'T go out makes the cabin fever all the more severe! We still have thick, icy snow on the ground, but I think the thaw has started. x

Hi Clare - thank you. The weather is indeed amazing ... amazingly cold. Amazingly pretty, but mostly amazingly inconvenient! x

Hi K ... oh yes, you and some other bloggers are much more expert at 'snow' than we are. Actually, when it comes, we see quite plainly how ill-equipped we are to deal with it at all. As you say, it takes over in that we can no longer do what we want to do, and have to do what we have to do, instead. Perhaps that is good for us from time to time? ;-) x

Hi Gina - Thank you. At least we had our heating working! x

Hi Tilly - The secondary school I went to, was 9 miles from my home, so we were bussed there. If the weather had been like it was this week, there's no way we'd have got to school. I can remember the snow stopping the buses a few times back then, but you're right - if people could walk to school, then school was ON! x

HI Gigi - Thank you. His hair is made up of dead twiggy bits. Had you not recogninsed his pebbly bits as nipples? No.2 would be most affronted! x

Hi Jane - Good old Tescos indeed. I couldn't drive in what we had - for a start I couldn't get out of the car parky bit, and secondly, I don't think my car would have coped! Well done you for doing it. x

Hi HTGT - Thank you. I wonder what my kids will remember about snow when they look back? I wonder if they'll remember that for the first 'bit' of their childhood(s) we didn't have that much snow to speak of? Yes, the DO sled! All day long if you let them! My daughter and 3 of their friends all got on the same sledge! x

Kitty said...

Hello there Mrs Moogs! Thank you. I told Percy you liked his nipples - I swear his smile got a bit wider ;-) Are you suggesting I WEAR my stash? :-O Would that be allowed?! x

Hi Malach - In answer to your question ... yes, it does. Well, not a week, but a few days. x

Hi GOK - Top class photographers use monochrome beautifully, don't they? I thought of you at the weekend when I saw the highlights of the Derby game. Well, I say 'highlights' but for the Derby fans there were very few :( x

Hi Suzie! Awww, thank you - the kids will be pleased :D x

Hi Picciolo - Yes, the snow looks pretty, but is SO impractical if one needs to drive - and I do. I think the thaw is upon us - the start of it anyway. Hooray! x

Hi Mrs Peri - Since that big snowfall we haven't had a proper thaw - it just sits there, looking all white and blankety. Today the air feels different, so I hope it's going to melt away now. x

Hi Meggie - it's been a bit much, quite frankly! Yes, it's amazing to think how diverse is the weather on this planet of ours. I wonder for how much of it we are to blame? x

Hi Burby - You and me both ;-) Is your snow going now? I'm hopeful that ours might be about to disappear. About time too. x

Hello again GOK. I'm open to experimentation :-D x

We've had nothing but rain today - to the extent that the field next to our house is flooded. It seems to have been winter for a very long time now. Tell me it'll soon be spring?

Your snowman is fantastic. What a happy soul he looks.
