Here we go again then ... the middle of another month, and I've got a few 'bits' about which to post. I hope you've enjoyed a very pleasant Bank Holiday weekend.

In a post of last year I talked about finding old videos, and watching them again. One of the films I found was 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest'. I didn't watch it at the time, I don't think I felt up to it. But last week I watched it again. It remains one of my favourite - if not my most favourite film of all time. Although it is undoubtedly a film I cannot just watch any time. I have to be 'in the mood'.
Can anyone think it anything other than a stunning piece of work? Jack Nicholson IS R P McMurphy so brilliantly, and Louise Fletcher IS Nurse Ratched so completely, that it was a surprise to me to discover neither of them were first choices for the roles for which they both won Oscars. The role of Ratched was turned down by six different (very famous) actresses before Fletcher was cast just a week before shooting. The moment where she (Nurse R) humiliates and mentally abuses poor Billy, whose stutter has left him after his night with Candy, is truly horrible. My favourite scene in the whole film is when McMurphy hands the Chief a piece of chewing gum ... those who know the film will know why.
Watching the film again not only reminded me of its brilliance, but also that those in the world with Nurse Ratched's characteristics are, surely, just as 'dangerous' to their fellow men (and women) as those with the criminal tendencies of Randall P McMurphy?

My friend 'F' and her daughter came up from Devon for the first week of the Easter holidays. Her daughter is now the same height as me :-O Last time I saw her, which was approximately 7 weeks earlier, she was still smaller than me. How the heck does that happen? Little people who I cuddled when they were teeny, and who I have seen grow up have no business growing as tall as me when they are only 12!

I need to thank Joanne over at Reasons To Be Cheerful 1, 2, 3 (I too was a fan of the late Ian Dury - such an inspiring character) for this lovely Blog Heart award. I recommend her blog to those of you who enjoy reading and relating around the issues of family and life; where the writing has honesty, humour and candour. Thank you Joanne - x - I appreciate the award.

Don't you just love it when a local charity shop puts out a big basket with a sign on the side which reads 'Fabric Remnants - 50p each'? I had a good old rummage through and these two fabrics somehow climbed out of the basket and into my hands:

They both said 'bag' to me. I'll post pictures if and when they get made.

The first half of April sees No.1's birthday, and this year was no exception: round it came, just like always. I'm not quite sure how that many years have whizzed by, but they have and she's so much taller and more grown-up looking than she was on her last birthday. She requested a chocolate brownie birthday cake (again):

Which was made even more gooey by the addition of some fudge icing on the top. (As you can see, I overcooked it a bit - hence it looking rather 'dry' along the base and at the side :-( ).
She had a sleepover party (translation: stay up really late being as noisy as possible, squealing, giggling and chatting) with the Gang of Four: No.1, S, B and J. They are a close knit foursome - all very different to each other, but somehow it 'works' when they're all together (or in any other combination, actually). They've been buddies for a few years now, and are comfortable enough with one another to bicker like siblings, but it's always done with affection and fun.
They all went up to bed at around 10.30pm. Much raucous laughter and loud bumps as people apparently fell off beds (that's what they told me, anyway). At 11.15pm I asked them to hush it up. They did ... for about 10 minutes. At midnight I said I would start getting grumpy from here on in as I was tired and needed to sleep. Shortly after 1am I decided I needed a different approach, so I sent a text to all their phones saying if there wasn't some quiet I would separate them and they'd have to sleep in different rooms. That worked reasonably well. At 2.15am one of them decided to sleep on No.2's bed (he was at his pal 'A's place), one of them decided to sleep in the bathroom, and two of them remained in No.1's room. They appeared, bright and bouncy at 8.30am, and feasted on a breakfast of bagels and pains au chocolat, whilst watching Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, on DVD.
I felt as knackered as a knackered thing the day after the night before, but they all seemed to have a good time, and that's the main thing.
This is a collage of some of No.1's birthday highlights (in case you were wondering, she has a 'thing' about ducks!):

●●●●●●
I'll leave you with a picture of Georgie-cat. She poked her head through the banisters on the landing, so I took a quick snap. That'll teach her.

'One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest' is an excellent film, isn't it?
It must be years since I watched it!
Love the ducks too!!
Hope you all enjoyed the long weekend,Kitty ;-)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is one of my favourite films too - one of the few films that I preferred to the book.
Hi Kitty, Sounds like No.1 enjoyed her birthday. I remember those sleepovers where even the biggest of threats from my Mam still didn't make us hush! :) The brownie cake looks delicious, and I love her duckie presents. I'm ashamed to say that I have not seen One flew over the cuckoo's nest, although I have seen Madagascar2 (shows my level of film critique) :) ha ha.
Anywho....hope you all had a great Easter. xx
I'm thinking "sock duck" ??? x
Sleeping in the bathroom during a sleepover, now that the kind of thing I used to do and I am only talking about last year ; )
Laters

Sleepovers - eeeek. That's a whole realm of horror we have yet to enter. Mine are BEGGING for one, and it seems that round here 7 is when they seem to start. Am I horribly old fashioned when I say I think that seems far too young to me?!
And when did this whole sleepover craze start anyway? I had never heard of them when I was a little girl.
I used to loove having sleepovers! I doubt that my daughter will ever experience them though...a local mother told me that they don't tend to trust other people with their children!
Beautiful kitty pic BTW!
What do I love the best , the cake the cat , the fabric maybe the ducks , love them all .
D'you know, I've not seen One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest... but after your little taster here, I'm going to look out for it. Thanks.
Happy Birthday No.1!!! It sounds like a proper sleepover - love the idea of you texting them all! Brilliant!
Lucy x
Fantastic kitty pic! Your timing was perfect catching that!
Love the "vintage" fabrics you got for 50p! I wish our charity shops had such goodies.
Hi Sal - It's one of the best films ever made, in my very humble opinion. If you see a copy in a charity shop, nab it! x
Hi Gina - Yes, I think I agree with you. The film has *something* special. x
Hi Baggy - she had a lovely sleepover. I didn't, but that's not the point, is it? Did you enjoy Madagascar 2? I think the hippo called Moto Moto is very funny! x
Hi Julia ... Hmmmm, now there's a thought! x
Hi Nicey - Ha! Those days are gone for you now, aren't they? Wait until your kids are old enough to do all this - it's knackering! x
Hi DC - Hmmm, I don't think my daughter did it until she was around 8, and then she came home in the middle of the night a couple of times. No.2 is 8, and enjoys the occasional sleepover (I'm a horrid mum and only allow them during the holidays). I can remember going to stay the night at my best friend's house when I was around 10 and upwards of that. It's something they all do seem to enjoy. x
Hi Charlie - Awww, that's a shame. Isn't there a family to whom you're close that you could introduce to the English custom of sleepovers, when your daughter is a bit older? The kids really do seem to love them. x
Hi Clare - Awww, thank you. x
Hi Mr Dot - You've never seen it? :-O Golly. I recommend it to you in the strongest terms - it's a wonderful film. x
Hi Lucy - Yes, a proper sleepover, complete with grumpy mother! Do you know, they took more notice of those texts than any amount of me pleading with them to hush up. The wonders of modern technology, eh? x
Hi Jane - She doesn't like having her picture taken, so I have to be quick if I want to snap her! The charity shop from which I got that fabric doesn't usually 'do' fabric - it was a one-off - I got lucky! x
A sleepover, what a good Mom, but it is something we all do, don't we? As for your movie, i could only watch it once, it was too much for me , but yes, an excellent one for sure!!
You are clearly a brilliant mom -- sending the text messages is a stroke of genius. It's always hard for me to remember to think in their world!
Ha! look at that face, what a picture of innocence........no bird or mouse ever knowingly passed these lips!
Kim xx
Can you believe I've never seen One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest?
And you are a very nice mummy - I've told my eldest he can have a sleepover as soon as he turns 18!!
Aaww how cute does Georgie look?
Helloo you, belated Happy Birthday to No 1 and well done on the splitting up ha ha. Did you watch Madagascar 2? It's great.
Yummy yummy cake mmmmmm
K xxx
I love your updates! Those sleepovers exhaust me too. TG is on one tonight and we are reciprocating tomorrow night. Not sure if it is a good thing to be on the second round! They will either be very tired or just tetchy!
So glad your No.1 had a good birthday, I like your highlights pic.
Beautiful edible cat (I still miss mine and hope I can 'afford' to keep one when I am free from here)
Take care, hope your week is going ok
Burby X
What a fantastically entertaining post. I have been meaning to watch One Flew Over.. again for ages, will definately do so now. I love the birthday sleep-over description, sounded like fun. And those cat's eyes, simply beautiful and remind me of the cat I had when growing up.
Oh, and thanks for the mention!
I love almost any movie with Jack in it. He plays the greatist psycho, probably because he might be one :) Love the snap of Georgie cat.
I hope you have recovered from your night with little sleep! I also had a sleepover night, but with two six year olds, who despite being very excited were spark out by 8.45! And that cake looks delicious...
: )
My DD2 has a gang of four (well, five in her case) but they have yet to sleepover at ours - DD1 has had a couple of these very late night ones, though - luckily, her friends tend to sleep in a bit.
The cake looks scrummy; I'd ask for the recipe but I'm on a diet and anyway, we've no birthdays now until September (and then they are all in a row boom, boom, boom).
OH, and if you do take up JuliaB's suggestion of a sock duck, I'd really like to see that. :)
Love me some Cuckoo's Nest
Cat warning #6: Before putting head through banisters check for woman with camera.
Good to catch up on all the bloggy happenings.
Oooh how times have changed! I love how you texted them! Glad you at least survived the sleepover even if a little tired.
Hi Jane - They enjoy their sleepovers, and it doesn't happen that often (I couldn't cope!). x
Hi Anna - I was warm in my bed, and my daughter's room is up another flight of stairs. It was laziness as much as anything, but they really did take more notice, and I got a string of texts saying 'sorry' back! x
Hi Kim - Actually, she's not a hunter. The most she's ever 'caught' is a twig, a few leaves, some worms, a grasshopper and a couple of flies. Bless her. x
Hi Ali - You've never seen it? Gosh - well if you are a fan of the slightly dark, psychological drama, I think you'll love it. I bet you'll have to 'give in' and do a sleepover (or three) before he's 18! x
Hi Kaz - She's a pretty girl, isn't she? Yes, I saw Madagascar 2 - Moto Moto is my favourite character, I laughed out loud. x
Hi Burby - Thank you. Oh dear - no, I think being on the end of the second leg, as it were, could be quite difficult. Some of them seem to cope with sleepovers better than others, don't they? I hope you do manage to get another cat - they are such good company. I'm never completely alone if Georgie is here. x
Hi 1,2,3 - Thank you. Oooh, I hope you do manage to watch it again - I really enjoyed it. Thanks for the award - and you're very welcome to the mention! x
Hi Ron - You're right, he plays a brilliant weirdo, but I think Cuckoo's Nest is his finest hour. Georgie hates having her photo taken - I feel like I got one over on her! x
Hi Picciolo - I'm just about caught up on sleep now! Awww, bless your daughter and her friend for going to sleep early. My son and his friend tend to go to sleep earlier - it's those girls who stay up late chatting! x
Hi Kate - You'll have to bite the bullet and 'do' the Gang sleepover at some point. I feel like I don't have to do it for a good while again now. The brownie cake is just the one from my old Dairy Cookbook, with some fudge icing on top. x
Hi Malach - Yep, me too. x
Hi Alison - I think she'll take your advice next time ;-) x
Hi Natasha - They were seriously cheesing me off, so I needed to stoop to their level. I knew they all had their phones right next to them ... so that was the way to go. x
A good start to the month in the Wrinkle household especially factoring in the Blogerry Picnic. Hope the rest of it is even better. Although maybe the giggly girls did push their luck a bit far, too much choccy cake perhaps ;-)
I also think that 'One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest' is one of the few films that wasn't a disappointment compared to the book. Jack Nicholson was totally the right person to play that role.
Hi Kitty, hope you are having a great week, love the picture of your cat :) xx
Happy Birthday No. 1!! I almost can't write more because of the big, delicious presence of that brownie cake--LOL! Scrummy post all around, Kitty...and very fun mosaic! Happy Days to you all ((HUGS))
Kid? Ducks? Cats? You have yourself a small zoo! As if I have room to talk with two kids, two dogs, two cats, and two reptiles. Hubby mentioned you resemble Noah's Ark the other day.
Mmmmm! Juicy Fruit!!!
Excellent film.....
Love Plausey x
you are right about the film; i was inspired to read the book following and decided i liked the film better. and happy birthdays!
Aww Kitty, you take such great pics and put them in wonderful collages. Such lovely bright colours..how do you make the collages btw??
I LOVE the pic of Georgie - such a great shot. She is such a pretty pud!
much love

Isn't it amazing how quickly children grow, I have spent most of this morning re-kiting out my monster in new shoes for every posable activity at school that I only bought a few months ago! You also have an adorable kitty, very photogenic.
You are a good mum having sleep overs, I used to hate it when my son suggested having them!! Oh Crisps and biscuits etc all to be found in between the sheets after it was all over and done with...YUK!! Thank you for your lovely comment on my Blog too!! Andrea x
I LOVE your cat. She's beautiful !!!!
x
I *hate* One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest! Having had a sister in a state run mental hospital that movie was MUCH too much like real life. Having a loved one in a place like that was awful but having to watch a movie of it while living it was just too much for me to bear! *shudder*
Oh I haven't seen One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest for years - great film.
Love your cat - he's cute!
Cheers
Anne
Hey-ho Kitty.
I saw OFOTCN many years ago and it had an almost lasting impact on me. Similar film but more up to date is Girl - Interrupted and somehow I really identified with that one - you have to see it to know what I mean.
Loving Georgie-cat - you must've been pretty close to get this shot.
Oooooh, chocolate brownie cake, my mouth is watering.
Happy belated birthday to your daughter, hope she had a great day.
Can I ask how old she is, I noticed the make-up in the photos. Jess has asked for make-up for her birthday and i've been trying to disencourage it (I just don't want her to grow up 'hehe').
I used good ol' PVA for the lamp. Only problem is, it's gone a little hard and crunchy, although you can't tell by looking at it.
Enjoy the rest of half term.
Take care
((hugs))
Beki xxx
I totally remember the movie and how awesome it was. Love the fabrics; I would not have been able to resist either :)
Okay, that cake looks fabulous. Also, I like that movie a LOT, but I have only been able to watch it once. (!)
Isn't Georgie cute? She knows what she's doin'!!
Ya know, I didn't remember if I left a comment, then I looked and I did. And I did not say what I was trying to say correctly.
It should read:
Kid? Ducks? Cats? You have yourself a small zoo! As if I have room to talk with two kids, two dogs, two cats, and two reptiles. Hubby mentioned THAT WE resemble Noah's Ark the other day.
ahem...what can I say...I been STRESSED out lately. :)
"Mmmmmm, Juicy fruit"
There are some films you can watch over & over. Another Jack N's is Terms of Enderment, but again, you need to be in the mood... with a box of tissues handy!
Happy Birthday to the Duck collector!
As for Georgie-cat, well, she is gorgeous.
Those sleepovers are a killer aren't they! I tend to try and ignore the chatter now and live with the morning after horrendous, grumpy children!!
Kitty is lovely.
Hi Sharon - yes, April is often a busy but good month for us. I can't imagine anyone BUT Jack Nicholson being such a brilliant McMurphy. x
Hi Alex - It's a bit of a weird week actually - hope yours is good! x
Hi Tracy - Thank you. I don't know how she got from tiny baby to this in the blink of an eye, but she did! x
Hi MI - Yes, your zoo is even busier than my zoo. But we wouldn't have it any other way, would we? x
Hi Plausey - Yep, that's the one. x
Hi Grit - It's one of the few times that the film - for me, at least - outshone the book. Good writing, brilliant acting and fabulous direction, I guess? x
Hi Lily - Thank you. I enjoy taking pictures for the blog (I'm a complete anorak over angles and lighting, etc.) I make the collages in PaintShop Pro, but I'm sure it could be done in almost any photo editing software. I really must try to overcome my phobia of Paintshop and give it a go. Georgie doesn't like having her picture taken, so I did well to get that photo. x
Hi TH - The world speeds up once you have kids, doesn't it? It really does. My kids both outgrew their 'new' uniform of last September, by Christmas. It's no joke, is it? The cat says thank you! x
Hi Andrea - It has to be done once in a while, but not too often! Glad you got your move all done and are back posting. x
Hi Tillyboo - Thank you! She is a gorgeous girl, both in looks and in temperament. x
Hi Mamaspark and welcome to my Bloggy Bits. I can fully comprehend why and how you'd find OFOTCN too close to home under those circumstances. I'm sure we'd all feel the same. You've given me food for thought. I hope your sister is now fully recovered? x
Hi Anne - It is a good film, one of the best, I think. Georgie's a she, rather than a he but she doesn't mind people making that mistake :-D x
Hi Nan - Long time no see, how are you? I remember the first time I saw it - it was late at night but I was far too traumatised to sleep; it had a huge impact. The stupid cat stuck her head through the railings and I had my camera, so I zoomed right in! x
Hi Beki - My daughter is 12 - going on 32! I have taken the decision to pick my battles over the next few years, very carefully. The little bit of make up she wears now, isn't worth the fight - I'm sure there will be issues about which I will want to expend energy, but this isn't one of them. Thanks for the tip on the fabric/lampshade. x
Hi RS - I don't think anyone could fail to register the impact of that film. Those fabrics really are lovely - I got me a bargain! x
Hi Chris - I don't think it was one of my best Brownie moments, but it got eaten, so ... can't have been too bad. Georgie is very cute, and plays on it for all she's worth ;-) x
Hi MI - I knew what you meant! Sorry to hear about the stress, and hope it lessens up at some point SOON. You could sure as hell do with less on your plate. Take care. x
Hi Elaine - Another fan? It's great, isn't it? x
Hi Meggie - Oh yes, I remember watching Terms of Endearment - with Shirley McLaine, right? I'm not sure I've ever seen a duff JN movie. x
Hi Lin - I try to tune out of the chatter too. In fact chatter is ok, it's all the loud clomping around I can't stand. It tends to only happen with *certain* visiting children! x
You know I swear everytime I look at the YC legs they have got longer. I am quite expecting that with in the year she will be as tall as me! We have very little height in both sides of our family so it will be interesting to see how tall she gets. She is already as tall as one of our full grown very short neices!
As for sleep overs.. I remeber some very late nights with the EC and the only thing that quieted them down was the threat of seperating them. It seems to work.
And lastly...lovely picture of Georgie. Looks very like our Curry. If I ever get the computer back to normal I'll send you a picture!
I just clicked Georgie-cat's photo and I have to tell you that it made me flinch. I was startled at the size of those eyes. WoW! What a gorgeous animal.
Hi ATP - I think No.2's grown AGAIN :-O He's in his second size of trousers since September! How do they do that?! I'd love to see pics of your cat - cats are such beautiful creatures. x
Hi Elaine - You got up close and personal with her, eh? She is a very pretty girl - I always think her eyes look like she has some sort of eye pencil round them! x
I watched that film once ages ago and it upset me so much I've never dared see it again.
Scary, scary cat photo!
Hi Michaela - Awwww ... but you see why I have to be 'in the mood' to watch it. If I were feeling in the slightest bit wobbly, I think it would be quite traumatic. x
