Family Photography (2)

OK ... you seemed to like the last post about the kids and their cameras, so here's another one. Over the Easter holidays, we went round to Mum's. We were going to go on from there to somewhere picturesque, but the kids said they didn't really want to, so they decided they'd just use their cameras around her place. I liked this idea - it got them to look at things with which they're quite familiar, in a totally new way. (As always, clicking on the individual pictures, allows you to see them 'embiggened'. Hold down CTRL and click at the same time to open the picture in a new tab. I'm sure there must be a tweak to the html to automatically open links in a new window ... I must try to find it).

No.1 decided she was going to try to get to grips with her Macro button. Her two favourite macro shots of the afternoon were these:

The top one is a flowering shrub Mum has in the garden, I think it's a Japonica - it grows quince fruit later on in the year. It's very pretty, and I think No.1 has captured it well. The second is of a small ceramic frog in the garden - it sits, very unobtrusively, under some plants. I think it looks slightly disturbing, it definitely has a menacing glint in its eyes. No.1 took lots more shots but these two are her favourites.

No.2 continues to surprise and impress me with the imagination he shows in snapping highly original shots:

The top one is 'just' of some shingle his Nanna has in her front garden, but I love the textures and colours he's managed to capture. The middle one is a close up of the badge on the back of his Uncle's car. The bottom one is of a Hellebore in the garden - one flower facing downwards so you can see the pattern on the back of the petals, another pink flower just fading from the height of its bloom, and then on the right a flower as it's aged and going to form seeds, but still showing lovely patterning on the petals.

I have to tell you, before they got these cameras, I'd have bet money on No.1 being the one who would get the arty shots ... but no. No.2, who has never shown a strong artistic streak before, spends time thinking about what he will photograph, and is so enthusiastic about his camera: it's wonderful to witness. We were driving past a wall last week and he commented about the texture, and how good it would look in a photo ... he is really looking at things in a whole new light and I couldn't be more pleased.

My favourite shots of mine of that afternoon were both taken in the garden:

The top one gets up close and personal with a Muscari (Grape Hyacinth). I have a 'thing' for blue flowers, and like the way I could see each individual little 'ball' of blue by getting this close to the flower. The second one is a single blossom from Mum's Camellia plant which she has in a pot by the front door. It's an absolutely stunning plant.

And finally, for all you quilty types - I took some pictures of the latest blocks on one of the quilts Mum's making at the moment. She's quilting it as she goes and will then join the blocks to one another with some sashing. I've made a collage here, but if you click on it, you'll see the blocks in much more detail:

I took the liberty of making the pictures all the same size, but the blocks aren't all the same size, and there are others which I haven't shown - a couple of 'house' blocks, some lovely wavy leaves and buds, one of flying geese 'trees', and others too. I'll be sure to take a photo of the finished quilt and show it to you.

There's bound to be another photo-y post brewing soon - watch this space!

isn't it funny how you expected No 1 to *do* pictures but it turned out to be no 2...life can like that ;)

Love your mums patchwork blocks..........she is a clever lady.

It opens up a whole new world... and a whole new hobby for them!
Hope they continue to enjoy their 'snapping'.

You are all so talented! Obviously it's in your genes. I have noticed my no.2 looks at things differently when armed with a camera. I love all your pics, but especially No.2's, they are my kind of shots! Your mums camellia is amazing though, so uniform and geometric in shape, isn't nature extraordinary?

Love your new colours on your blog :)

Tracy said...

LOTS of terrific, happy camera work there...beautiful photos--especially the florals! Your mum's quilt blocks are wonderful--love all the pink! :o) Happy Days to you all ((HUGS))

The blue of the muscari is very true. How was that achieved? I have to use foliage setting to get it right in mine. What kind of cameras are they? Sorry to be so nosey.
Thats really great to get them interested in photography. Its a much 'easier' thing to start them with nowadays compared to having to pay to get a roll of film printed.Maybe they'll be blogging soon!

What can I say, your kids are brilliant! Kinda like their Mum. ;)

Love the pictures. Nr 2 is obviously much more into texture (and cars!) Great pictures by both though.

Love the quilt blocks. Your Mum needs to get a blog too. Can't wait to see more. And when are you going to make a quilt?

Just thought I'd pop by and say hello. What gorgeous photos. Want to say I particularly like a,b or c but actually I like them all! And the quilt is amazing too. What a very talented family!

Funny how our kids continually surprise us, isn't it?

I love their pictures, and I love that camelia you snapped as well!
Great pictures!

Hi Blossom - I love it when the kids surprise me like that; maybe this is how No.2's creativity will find an outlet? x

Hi Trasha - It does me good to have my assumptions turned round. I couldn't be happier that No.2 loves his camera so much. x

Hi Sal - With lots more practice, they'll do even better, won't they? But I already like how they're looking at things differently - especially No.2 x

Hi Burby - I'm pretty sure neither of them expected that they'd enjoy having a camera so much - especially No.2. Yes, I love that Camelia, it's perfect isn't it? Nature never ceases to amaze me. Thanks for the comment re: the blog - a happy accident, perhaps? x

Hi Tracy - Mum's quilt will be largely pink and green. The colours aren't so 'true' on that collage - I hope they'll show up better when I photograph the completed quilt. x

Those kids continue to impress! :)
After they start to get a decent little library of shots, and have some favorites, I would recommend finding a printing service that can give you some high quality copies (Maybe MPix.com if they are available in the UK?) and frame their faves.

Hi Jackie. I have a Canan IXUS 70 - not so modern, but a brilliant camera, and ideal for me in this 'learning' phase of photography. I took that shot with just the macro lens on a 'normal' setting (ie. not foliage). The kids cameras are GE A735s - which are fine for them at this stage in their lives (his is black, hers is pink!) x

Hi MI - Awww, thank you hun. I think they're fabulous, but I'm rather biased ;-) x

Hi Natasha - Yes, he does seem to notice texture more than his sister - she goes for colour more than he does. Mum has made some really fabulous quilts over the years. I've made one big one and two mini ones. That's it - my sum total as a quilter! x

Hello Maternal Tales and welcome to my Bloggy Bits. Thanks for dropping in and taking time to leave such a nice comment. I'll be sure to visit you soon. Take care :-)

Hi Alex - The weather this week is gorgeous - that makes things seem a lot better! Hope work isn't getting you down too much. x

Kitty said...

Hi Joy - Thank you! I hope they'll learn all sorts of little tips and tricks that will stand them in good stead for future use of cameras and photography. That sounds incredibly pompous ... of course I hopoe they'll have lots of fun with the cameras too. That Camelia is a stunning plant - the flowers are so waxy and perfect. x

Hi CB - Thank you. Yes, I think that quilt will be lovely - she's working on two in pink and green themes for the twin beds in her spare room. x

Hi Beki - Yes, I think that one of the pebbles is my favourite too. I love that he thought to look down and find a great shot! x

Hi P&P - Thank you. I will make sure I ask Mum about the pattern, and email you with her answer, ok? I think it might be part of a quilt-a-long thing at her quilting group, but I'm not sure, so will ask for you. x

Hi Mindy - I love it that they surprise me. It'd be terrible if they were completely predictable! x

Hi Tom - Praise indeed from someone as good with a camera as youo! Thank you. Thanks for the advice about MPix.com ... I'm going to check that out. Of course their shots will make it to the blog books I'm currently compiling, so we'll definitely have some hard copies that way. x

Great photos Kitty, I'm still getting to grips with my new camera. It's great to get children into photography as it encourages them to slow down their pace and look at things they would normally miss.

Well, clearly, you're surrounded by artists! The kids are doing a great job with their cameras. How fun! And your mum is a stunning quilter!

wow, your kids really have an "eye" for taking good pictures, I tend to think about it to much and they never are really very good. I love your flower shots, especially the last one.

Yummy floral eye candy Kitty and Wrinklets. What a talented bunch you are! 2's eye is indeed different to 1's but he certainly has one. Hope they keep up with the photography, certainly getting an instant result with the digital system helps to encourage more use. Plus no wasting money to print the not-so-good pictures is a great advance. The quilt blocks are gorgeous, I keep looking at quilting fabrics but me and sewing machines have never got along well....

Cool - almost cold - and cloudy today but STILL no rain!

Kitty said...

Hi Anne - Thank you. Yes, No.2 likes car badges, as well as signposts and flags. But if it gets him looking at things in a different way, I'm all for it! x

Hi Klein - Ooooh, an idea? Can't wait to see what you come up with! x

Hi Elise - No.1's forte is graphics, but if this turns out to be No.2's 'thing', I'll be more than happy. We have yet to tap into his creative vibe but maybe this is it? x

Hi Dawn - Thank you! Yes, the women in my family are definitely all creative in one way or another. The chaps ... hmmmm, yes actually, I can see it there too! x

Hi Marit - Thank you! x

Hi Twiggy - I've had my camera for over a year and I'm still learning what it can do, although I feel like I've taken a bit of a step forward with it recently. Yes, that's exactly it with the kids - it makes them really look instead of just glancing. x

Kitty said...

Hi Suzy - thank you. We aren't, of course, anywhere near your standard, but we are learning and enjoying that learning. I think No.2 would be excellent at HSMSHS - when he's old enough for a blog I'll point him in your direction! x

Hi Malach - Thank you! x

Hi Anna - We're all learning to look at things in a different way - that's what I like about them having their own cameras. No.1 is self conscious about being 'seen' taking snaps - but that's because of her age and wanting to look 'cool' and not a 'dork'. Tsk. No.2 and I don't care! x

Hi Jane - I often take 4 or 5 pictures of the same thing, and only when I get back and upload them to the pc do I see which ones have 'worked' and which ones haven't. I'm gradually learning about light and angles, etc. but No.2 seems to instinctively go for it from the word go. x

Hi Sharon - It's great seeing how different their photos are, isn't it? And of course when it all gets to eventually go in a blog book, they will forever be able to see and show their own families. Perhaps you are growing into a sewing mojo? If you can knit socks, you can definitely sew - it's way easier!

Hope you get the rain you need soon. We are enjoying some fabulous spring weather at the moment. x

Hi Kitty, You are the blogging queen to me. Sounds like a lovely day you had pottering around in the garden. I have such memories of my grandparents garden which seemed huge and to have many nooks and crannies as well as many creatures x So exciting. I occasionally go back and peep but it's (obviously) new people now as I am ancient x

Kitty, I personally love the picture of the Camellia flower. The shapes and slight color changes are captured so well. I love doing macro photos of flowers they always seem so different when they are viewed up close.

Chris said...

I have never seen such a gorgeous camelia. how can that happen?!

sharon said...

Update - we have drizzle! Not a lot of use but it's a start. Never thought I'd be wanting some rain lol!

Wow, really pretty.

Hi Clare - I hope you will blog the results of your kids advantures with their cameras. When my blog posts get put in a book, I'm going to make sure I add the kids photos in - perhaps even more of them than are on the blog. It's a great project. x

Hi Lin - Thank you. Those flowers were so pretty, they were begging to be photographed. x

Hi Twinkles - Awwww, bless you. My grandparents had a whole apple orchard - oh my, when I think of the photographic opportunities therein - I'd love to have those now. Gardens are getting smaller though, aren't they? More's the pity. x

Hi WW - Thank you. Yes, that Camelia flower was stunningly beautiful, so waxy and symmetrical. x

Hi Ron - I think that Camelia shot is my favourite too - I just happened to catch it right, didn't I? Macro shots of almost anything are very appealing to me - I love the different persepctive we can get from being so close to something and perhaps also seeing it from a different angle to that which we usually do. Get out there with your camera! x

Hi Chris - I got lucky and found the most perfect one! Nature was showing off that day - for sure. x

Hi Sharon - woohoo! All the rain dancing I'm doing is starting to filter through then? Best you go out and buy a brolly! x

Hi Snowbrush - Thank you! x

Your children both have a very good eye for a picture. I love the japonica, the camelia is perfection and your son's car badge is brilliant. A career in phtography beckons I think. Your Mum's talented too... just look at those beautiful blocks. I love the colours she's put together.... What a gifted bunch you are :)

It's really refreshing to see technology being used in a more active and creative manner. What a great way of expanding their thinking and appreciation of the world around them.

Digital cameras are just so fab for children. My eldest son is the one who takes the wonderful photos. He just has an eye for them and he is patient and hangs around for a good shot. He got one yesterday of an emu poking its head into his camera. Priceless. But yes, he takes weird things sometimes - he plays with the film speed - and experiments in a way I would never think to do.

Wonderful photos.

Kitty said...

Hi PC - I think No.1's shots would improve if she could lose some of her self-consciousness about being seen taking photos! She's at that age though :-(. Thank you for your lovely comment. x

Hi Suzie - Thank you. It's just a nice 'project' for us all to do together. I know your eldest takes wonderful photos too. x

Hi Kaz - No.2 has a different way of looking at stuff. Is it because he's a boy or just that he has an original way of looking at stuff? I guess time will tell. x

Hi Alison - No.1 is extremely creative with technology - graphics being her 'thing'. No.2 has not, previously, shown a hugely creative 'bent' so I'm really glad we've found something he enjoys so much. x

Hi RB - I agree. Once the initial outlay has been found they can play around to their hearts' content. And the activity is prolonged by the excitement of checking the pictures out on the pc. In No.1's case there is then further fun from editing (she loves PhotoShop). I'm really glad I saved up for those cameras! And yes, you're right - they fiddle around with the various settings and buttons in a way which we are perhaps too scared to? x

Hi 2H - My Mum makes the most wonderful quilts - and yet she will tell you she has no patience. Rubbish! I couldn't do it, I know that. x

Hi Maggie - Golly, is it a well travelled frog? :-O x

Hello Griever and welcome to my Bloggy Bits. It's a great scene isn't it? A pivotal point in the whole film and never fails to make me smile. Thanks for dropping by and taking the time to comment - I'll be sure to visit you soon. :-)

Hi Kitty, photography is such a great outlet & children seem to love it. Boo loves to walk around with my big Canon round her neck taking random shots - some of which are pretty good, albeit by accident.
I've taken over 15,000 photo's in 5 years and dh had to buy a special backup machine thingy to acomodate them all. Oops !
They are my memories and very important for Boo.

I love your mums blocks, what a very clever lady ! x

omg! I am in love with your mother's quilt blocks..
And, I just happen to LOVE Muscari, I also Camellia.

Kitty said...

Hi Tillyboo - I take lots of photos these day too, and in fact a new external hard drive was one of my birthday presents! Mum's blocks are fab, aren't they? x

Hi Meggie - Awww, bless you. She's so chuffed that so many people have said they like them. She doesn't know how good she is. Glad you liked the flowery photos - I know you take some rather stupendous ones yourself. x
