Oh Bums!

'Oh Bums!' is an expression of frustration which I don't mind the kids overhearing. When you have small people, you have to adopt new forms of verbal outburst appropriate to their delicate ears, and that has been one of mine eversince No.1 was teeny. I have been using it quite a lot lately, because something crafty just wouldn't go right.

Hopping through the Blogosphere (like you do) has shown me so many wonderful and inspiring creations from fellow crafty types. I have a folder in my favourites entitled 'Crafty Bits': Within that folder are - I've just counted - the links to 84 craft projects and tutorials which have caught my eye. I had no idea there were quite that many, I shall have to give them a judicious pruning at some point. The trouble is, I see the pictures and think 'oh wow - I want to make/have one of those!' Even though I've already got more than I'll ever have time to complete, I still wander sites such as One Pretty Thing, Craftzine, and Whip Up! every single day, saving anything that takes my fancy. A habit to break, perhaps?

Anyway, one of the things that has caught my eye over the past 'x' months are the scrumptious crocheted ripple afghans/blankets I've seen. This one from Mrs Moogs. This one from Lucy Locket-Pocket. This one from Gina, and many, many more. I'm not a very competent crochet-er/ist in fact I only know how to 'do' one stitch, but those blankets caught my eye. I thought it would be nice to have a little project to work on whilst watching tv, so I went out surfing the web for a tutorial I could actually understand. I found one at Crochetcabana.com and duly saved it to my 'Crafty Bits' folder.

Instead of just leaving it there, I attempted to actually 'do' it. I managed to find my 2 crochet hooks (one is big, one is small) and grabbed an old ball of hideous white acrylic stuff from my stash with which to practice. Eventually, after about 4 goes at it, I ended up with this:

Which looks like the manky bit of white crocheting it is. However, I felt I was going in the right direction. Next it was time to try some stripes of colour:

Hmmm, aside from the washed out colours, and the fact that the green yarn was 'fluffy' and therefore not at all the look I wanted, it's almost 'there'. (Blogger is doing that weird thing and turning my picture round again - it's so annoying). The stitches were a bit too 'open' looking for my liking, so I went and bought a middle-sized crochet hook, and then set to work with some slightly more respectable yarn (still not the posh stuff though - posh stuff is wasted on me):

I don't know precisely why but I just don't like it. I don't know if it's the colours I've used, or what, but ... it's not working for me. At all. So ... it's been frogged. The idea was to make a blanket for Mum - a long term project for me with an eye to next Christmas. Mum can sew, and she can knit, but she can't crochet, so I thought it'd be something she'd really like. I still think it's something she might like, so I guess I could still attempt a crocheted blanket of some sort, but it's not going to be a ripple. Doesn't always go according to plan in the crafting world, does it? *sigh* :-(

I feel a bit of a failure, but at least I tried something I haven't tried before, and I'm a teeny bit pleased that I even managed to work out how to do it. I've since been playing with some more crochet - I don't know how to read crochet-ese, so just make it up as I go along. Of all the little bits with which I've experimented, I think these aren't too bad:

Would lots and lots of them all sewn together be fairly funky? Or just old lady-ish? I shall ponder on it and see if I still like them in a weeks' time, but I fear I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that I am not a crocheted blanket kind of girl. I may still do Mum some crocheted cushion covers or something, but for now I think I should probably concentrate on monkeys.

And I was so looking forward to being a hooker.

I like the flowers and I'm not a crochety flower kind of person.

I use 'oh bums', it's certainly much better than the alternatives

hi Kitty, I'm impressed and amazed at what you put your mind to do. I see those afghans around too and I admire the ones who make them. They're wonderful. No matter what color scheme you go with ... when it's all done and together it will be fabulous. Making the flowers must free you from having to commit to a paticular pattern of color. Kitty... I'm so glad I found you. You are such a model of inspiration. Oh Bums nothing...you're a natural hooker. =) xox

I love the flowers and I think you have something with the scarf. You could turn those little flowers into brooches... just a thought or decorate a wooly hat...

i think the flowers are great & they would look lovely threaded onto something to make them into a garland, x

I don't think an inherent dislike of it should prevent you from becoming a hooker at all, secretly I'm sure many don't really enjoy it - it is just the 'in thing' that all the cool kids are doing! (Not at all bitter - just congenitally unable to crochet!)

Personally loving the flowers more than the ripple - perhaps a cushion cover or a small blanket? Oooo! A vest for monkeys? Heeeey! What about a crocheted flower monkey? Oh the possibilities are endless!

I have to tell you that on the Selvedge stand at K&S show there were some long necklaces in yhin wool, in weary wartime looking colours made of these flowers selling for about£145.
I used to say 'Oh Bother' in front of my kids and then one day about 16 years later I had to go into a record shop and ask for 'Never Mind the B******* 'for one of them for Christmas.
(And it wasn't buzzcocks)

I think all your crochet is amazing - I am trying to teach myself crochet at the moment so can appreciate your efforts.

The flowers are just lovely - personally I'd use a lighter colour for the centres but thats just me

My word for little ears is "blimey" - my use of it is getting a bit out of hand.

In a telephone conversation with my mother in law when my sister in law was at my house - she counted that in a fifteen minute conversation I had used it 22 times !!!

Oh blimey !

I have sent you an award passed to me by VioletPosy. Please see here http://tawny75.blogspot.com/2009/01/sisterhood-award.html for details :)

I have one of those folders too. I plop stuff in and try not to think of how full it is too often. As a non-hooker I am very impressed by your fleurs.

Hi Laura - I need to think what I can do with those flowers that won't immediately make people thing 'old lady'. Glad I'm no the only one who 'oh bums'. x

Hi Elaine - Well thank you for considering me a 'natural hooker' - I am indescribably flattered. Perhaps I didn't give the ripple enough time? x

Hi PC - Perhaps a string of flowers as a scarf? Or yes, a brooch? Hmmmmm .... I'm going to be pondering all day now. x

Hi Kelly - A garland eh? Hmmmm. Maybe they should be a decorate finish to a wrapped gift? I'm sure I'll think of something to do with them! x

Hi Trash - lovely to 'see' you again after your big trip home. It's not that I dislike hookering, it's just that I was left feeling ... dissatisfied with it. Perhaps I'm just not cut out to be a hooker? :-( Yes, perhaps a flower as the finishing flourish to a monkey might be good? Or a Hawaiian monkey with a crocheted flower lei? x

Kitty said...

Hi Jackie - £145? :-O Good grief. Perhaps I will string a few together and wear it as a scarf for a few days to see if I get any response at the school gates? It's always a good 'audience'.

I remember 'Never Mind the B*ll*cks' - The Sex Pistols if I'm not very much mistaken? Very good of you to get it for them - I'd have made them get it for themselves. x

Hi F&T - Thank you. I bet you get better at crochet than me - I can't put my finger on why it's not 'happening' for me, but it's not. Very odd, I usually enjoy any and all crafting. :-( I did try the flowers with lighter centres, but preferred the darker ones. As you say - horses for courses.

Maybe you need a 'bother box' and put in 10 pence every time you say it ... treat yourself to some yarn with the proceeds ;-) x

Hi Tawny - Your dad can crochet? :-O Oh wow - I've never heard of a man crocheting before. I know a man who knits, but none that crochet. I will be over to your blog later today - thanks for thinking of me. x

Hi Burby - Yes, hooker! Thank you - perhaps I should give the flowers a 'run'? x

Hi Ali - I suspect we all have 'those' folders. I really must prune mine, I'm sure I'll never do some of the projects in there. I just like drooling over other people's fantastic work. Glad you like the fleurs - I just have to work out what to do with them now! x

I think you should persevere with the hooking Kitty, it's always good for a girl to have multiple talents ;-)

The flowers are very pretty and I like the sound of the Hawaiian monkey complete with garland. There's always something you can do with little flowers. I recently knitted a hat for a friend's little girl and decorated it with crochet flowers and ladybird buttons. Looked rather good even if I do say so myself.

I think the flowers sewn together would look great as a cushion cover. Crochet flowers are all the rage at the moment and the flower brooches are quite expensive.

Still on crochet I'm afraid. I borrowed a book from library with some really good [read simple] patterns in it. It's a kid's book which is just about my mentality so easy to follow. It's called 'Crochet' [that's novel] by a lady called Jane Davis and comes from the Lark Kids' Crafts group of publishers.
Still loving your taste in music Kitty - it will have to happen on my blog ...

Well I'm very impressed with your talents so far. It takes a certain person to be a good hooker, after all. I think the wavy bit and the flowers look great. But if you don't like them, I know it makes it much less enjoyable.

I'm very impressed that you worked out how to ripple by yourself but most of all, I totally LOVE those crochet flowers! They look so funky - in fact I think you should tell us exactly how you made them so you can start a new crochet craze - I definitely want to make some!

Hi Sharon - Well, I agree with you on the multiple talents front, but perhaps hookering isn't for me? :-( YOU NEED A BLOG so we could all SEE the hat and flowers and ladybirds. Goodness me Sharon, am I going to have to set you one up myself?! x

Hi CB - I'm still tinkering around, seeing if I can improve on the flowers. Good to hear you have the obligatory 'folder' too! x

Hi Nan - I shall keep an eye out for that book. I'm definitely very much a beginner at crocheting or 'hookering' as I've come to think of it ;-) x

Hi Peri - Oooh, let me know if you manage to conquer it - I found that tutorial fairly straightforward, after I'd read it a zillion times. x

Hi Julia - Oh yes, loud would definitely be the way to go - those 'yellow spectrum' colours are the ones mum likes. x

Hi SS - I don't think I'll ever be a good hooker. Perhaps a bad one now and again though? ;-) x

kleinzonnetje said...

I love the flowers! Think they'd look great together in a throw or a cushion cover - depends how long you can go before boredom sets in! I too have seen lots of the lovely crochet around at the moment and love the granny square crochet on attic 24. Am seriously tempted to get some colourful yarn and give it a go myself. Unfinished projects...what unfinished projects?!

Kitty said...

Hi Lucy - I would gladly tell you how to do it, if I only knew HOW to tell you how to do it. Chain a bit and then do stitches - does that sound ok?! x

Hi RM - Yes, me a hooker. Would make a change, no? My mum likes those colours from the 'yellow spectrum' so a cushion cover or throw in that might be ok? x

Hi Gerry - Thank you! I don't knit or crochet much - just now and again. And yes, I agree about the 'mum's language'. x

Hi WW - Try the tutorial on the link I posted - it worked for me! Good luck - let me know how you get on. x

Hi Chris - Oh yes, I'm a serial lurker at Attic24 - such beautiful work going on there! Have you thought about starting a blog - then we could SEE your work! x

Hello Mr B - nice to see you. I just fed 'Bumsen' into Babel Fish and asked it to translate from German to English. It tells me that in English it also means 'Bumsen', so I'm no further forward really. Is it particularly rude? x

Hi Kleinz (is it ok to call you that?!) - Thank you. I don't think I could do it forever and a day - would get seriously cheesed off with it after a while, so maybe a cushion cover is the way to go?! Go on - give it a go, the UFOs will still be there waiting for you ;-) x

So funny, I was just starting a scarf (because I have no patience to do a whole blanket right now and they are great at using up leftovers) and decided to us a ripple stitch like what you did. I made kid sized blanket years ago for #1 with same stitch, four rows of navy blue with one row of bright red was the pattern.

I think the flowers sewn together is lovely....so you can still make it...be that hooker you always wanted to be! Aim high!

Warped Mind of Ron said...

I think if you made a sweater you could attach all sorts of those flowers to them. I strongly support the hookers as best I can.

Well I like the wriggly stuff, looks like one of those trendy college scarves posh boys wear.

I cant knit, crochet, embroider, nowt so Im in awe of anyone that can. I couldnt even do that thing where you get a cotton reel and put 4 panel pins in it and wind it round to make it get a sausage tail. What on earth am I talking about I hear you ask - god knows.

I'm impressed Kitty, I think a flowery blanket would be lovely. My Mum tried to teach me to crochet last January by March I'd thrown in the towel! I keep having a look at my Happy Hooker book, thinking hmm that's nice and putting it back on the shelf. Bit like looking at all my lovely recipe books, but I replace them and go and eat some chocolate, so at least crochet is less fattening :)

Hi Suzie - Awww, bless you. x

Hi MI - I like the look of the ripple blankets, just not MY ripple blanket! I shall retain my ambitions to be a high class hooker! x

Hi Ron - I can't make a sweater! I get bored trying to knit anything bigger than 6" square. Good to know you support hookers. :-D x

Hi Suzy - Yes, I like the look of the wiggly stuff too - maybe I should give it another go? You do other creative stuff don't you? Like interior design, card making, scrapbooking and photography - none of which I can do. French knitting is, I think, the cotton reel/4 pins jobby. x

Hi Twigs - I just don't think I can do enough flowers to make a whole blanket ... but maybe a cushion? The trouble is, the crocheting makes me hungry for chocolate, so that's no good, is it? :-( x

Hi IB - I think you might well be right - it's the colours. I like the 'effect' but just knew I wasn't liking the look of it. x

Kitty said...

Hi Michaela - blimey, you can make yarn do wondrous, magical things of which I can only dream! I think a long funky scarf might be a good 'practice' piece. Hmmmmm. I am LOVING the idea of some flowers on a hessian bag. Thank you! x

Hi Anne - Thank you so much for being enthusiastic - you lot are helping me feel a little less 'defeated' by the whole thing. x

Hello Blather - how fantastic to see you. Do you know, I was just thinking about you today, and that yarn you sent me for me to practice felting with. Still haven't done anything with it yet. How are you? Drop me an email if you feel like a 'chat' - hope all is well with you and yours?

I like the sound of 'wowzers trousers' that one could be popular here. Might give it a try! Take care. x

Hi Gina - Yes, I think you might be right. The stitches are ok in themselves, it's the colours which let it down. Oh I like 'oh knickers' - I could get to use that one a LOT. x

Hi Gemma - The wiggly thing was going to be the start of a blanket, but it's gone now. Cast out in shame at its ugliness :-( x

Hi D-fly - The ripple is one big 'thing' and you have to do a whole stripe of colour at a time. Whereas with the granny squares you can start and then introduce new colours at any time, rearranging your squares at the very last minute. But I think I prefer the 'look' of the ripple. Hmmmmmm, tough decision. x

Hi MM ... well I just wasn't sure, that's why I needed to ask you peeps. I've been playing some more and made some different flowers now which I think I like a bit better than those ones I pictured. Still not sure about actually *making* something with them all though. x

Hi Nicey - Oh yes, pants is a great word, but I usually use it in the 'oh damn - that's a bit pants' meaning. x

Hi Alex - Thank you! I need to practice some more I think. I'm a very very amateurish hooker! x

Hi Plausey - patience my **** ... it's just stubbornness - I want to achieve something and I'm not giving up until I've *done* it. I think you are referring to French Knitting?! x

Hi Mrs Moogs - D'you think? I've frogged it now, but perhaps one day I will do some more - in different colours though because I think the cr@ppy colours were half the problem with that attempt. I think a cushion cover is probably the wisest thing to attempt for my first 'go'. x

Hi Tracy - Turning tricks with yarn and hook ... LOL. As you can see, I'm not very good at it. The colours are determined by mum - as it's for her, and she is very much a 'yellow person'. It wouldn't be my thing either, but there you are. I shall continue to play around with the hookering and see what I end up with! x

Hi Dyan - I think most of us probably have 'those folders' ... but will we ever get around to making the stuff? I really need to 'prune' my folder, I'm sure there are things there that I'll never make. x

Hi Lazylol - Thank you! Are you a good hooker? x

Hi Twinkles - Yes, you are busy. You are busy with 'real' things, whilst I am piddling around at being a hooker. No comparison. I could always do a granny monkey with crocheted hat/coat/bag? Actually, that's not a bad idea!

The music is the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan and his band Double Trouble. They don't make 'em like that anymore!
