Oh My Word - I'm Turning Blonde!
There I was (last week), minding my own business, brushing my hair (which has always been a chestnutty, auburny colour - not sure if I'm a reddish brunette or a brunetty redhead?) and what did I find? A crop ... a whole CROP ... of blonde hair. Ash blonde to be precise. Some may say it was 'grey' but it definitely looked ash blonde to me ;-) I must admit to having found the odd 'blonde' hair before, but never this many all in one place - perhaps they were having some sort of meeting? Planning their takeover of my hair? :-O In the past I've always just pulled them out - yes, I know all about the Old Wive's Tale which says if you pull one grey hair out then another 2/3/4/etc. will grow in its place. But it's just an old wive's tale: I'm not an old wife, so surely it wouldn't apply to me?
Hair is funny stuff isn't it? I can remember my smalls asking me when they were younger 'Why doesn't hair bleed when you cut it?' (I said it had no veins in it and veins are what carry blood round our bodies). In my experience most of us want the hair that we haven't got. Those with curls long for poker-straight silky hair; those with heavy straight hair wish for waves and curls; brunettes long to be blonde, and vice versa. It's the human condition I guess - to want what we don't have?
My hair has been short, long, curly and straight in my lifetime. It's naturally wavy - I'm very lucky - I can use the hairdryer or straighteners to make it straight, or I can scrunch it up to make it wavy. I've had hair as long as midway down my back, and as short as ... well, short! When I was at college I had one of those shaggy permy things that people were having at the time - I loved it, but being me, got bored with it.
One afternoon my friend 'F' and I (yes, the same 'F' who helped out when No.1 and I were so poorly last month - we've known each other since we were 5!) bunked off college, caught a bus into Oxford and walked into a salon. Perhaps we should have been perturbed by the lack of other customers there, but we weren't. We both had our hair cut extremely short. When we came out of the hairdressers, we sprinted to Selfridges (which is now Primark ... pah! Even the shops are dumbing down) and into the Ladies' to use their huge mirrors to assess the damage. I remember thinking 'Oh sh*t ... what have I done?' We applied copious amounts of make up to try to detract from the hair situation - but of course what was done was done. We hopped on a bus back to college, where I was totally ignored by people who knew me very well. This was to be the most common response from others ... they just didn't recognise me. I don't know whether my shaggy 'do' was simply synonymous with 'me' or what, but for a good month afterwards people would walk past me in the street, in pubs (oops, I shouldn't have been in the pub should I ... not officially old enough to drink? *blush*) - in short, everywhere.
When I got home from college that teatime I walked into home through the back door. Mum was in the kitchen cooking, she turned round to say 'hello' and her mouth just fell open. She started doing a very good impersonation of a fish: no sound, just plenty of jaw movement, and a look of shock on her face. I've grown it and had it cut short again twice since then, but that was the most drastic haircut I ever had.
So, back to my dilemma. What to do about this 'blonde' thing? Do I embrace it as a badge of honour of m
y age and experience? Do I hurtle into new found 'blondeness' with abandon, hoping the old adage is true and that I'll have more fun? Or do I cover over the 'blonde' with some chemicals, thereby prolonging the illusion of youthful hair? Yep, I thought the latter too.
I must admit I wandered into Boots the Chemist's at the weekend. I found the 'hair colourants' aisle, and stood there looking ... there are ZILLIONS of them! Permanent ones, semi-permanent ones, wash in-wash out ones, ones in mousses, ones in boxes, ones in tubes, ones in sachets. For a start, I'm not putting anything 'permanent' on my hair ... what if it went green? Or that lavender colour favoured by old ladies (and Dame Edna Everage)? Or it went too dark and I ended up looking like Morticia Addams? Surely a colour in a mousse runs the danger of
ending up on one's pillow? I did purchase a box (not just the box, obviously ... it has chemicals, words and weird big plastic 'hands' inside). It's a semi-permanent thing that will apparently wash out in around 24 washes. It says it's 'Reddish Brown' which sounds about right. Next time I see one of those 'blonde' hairs, I'm putting these chemicals straight on my hair - I'll let you know how I get on.

Ooh, I like that idea. I think I shall start calling my grey roots "blonde", that doesn't sound nearly as bad!
I have a fear of hairdressers. I'm very short sighted and as a teenager had my hair cropped very short - I couldn't see what the bit... LADY was doing without my specs. .... I cried all the way home.
:(
My advice is to dye it an obviously fake colour to make yourself look wacky and embarrass your children (they sooner they learn to cope with such feelings the better). If you are slightly auburn, go for a bright reddish hue to make a definite statement.
My best friend goes to the hairdressers every 4 / 6 weeks to get rid of her "blonde" roots. She has always had dark hair though and the "blonde" didn't blend in too well. After years of highlights I've now discovered my own natural "blond" highlights!
My hair seems to be the sort of pale brown where you can't really see the grey (or strangely white) bits so well. I've been collecting grey hairs since I was in my teens. I used to colour my hair but that was before I discovered I was allergic to the stuff and that it made my head come out in spots and my hair fall out! I think I prefer grey hair to no hair!
This is very timely as I have to recolour my hair to stop the silver bits blinding people when the sun shines on my hair!!
I've even got the colour ready.
Maybe today but then again maybe after my interview tomorrow - the colour is a wee bit purplish and I don't want to scare to poor folk!!!
xx
I reckon I have far too much grey hair for my age and have been colouring it for ages - when it grows out a bit I get a shock at how bad it really is! I have no intention of going grey gracefully (yet) because my actual hair colour itself seems to have really faded to a neutral nothingness as well as the white stuff so I really would look a miserable old thing!
Hi MM ... Awww, sorry to hear about your teenage haircut - sometimes hairdressers can be evil, can't they? :-O And yes, your roots are very blonde :-D x
Hi GB - Hmmmm, something obviously 'fake' eh? I'm not sure it would go with my very unfake face though :-O Oh and I'm an expert at embarrassing the children - it's one of the greatest pleasures of parenthood :-D x
Hi cd&m ... gosh you have blonde bits too? I'm glad it's not just me. x
Hi ttt - Now that is the best sort of hair to have - my dad's hair was exactly like that, and it was very hard to notice that he was going grey until he'd gone grey! I have a friend who is similar allergic to hair dye - though she finds the vegetable ones ok. x
Hi Lesley - Well personally, I think silver and purple hair sounds very ... regal :-D Do you want to blind your interviewer(s) with 'blonde' or let them know you're 'purple'? Hmmmm ... maybe half and half? :-D x
Hi Lucy - I am so relieved to know it's not just me with the blonde habit - you've no idea how much you ladies have cheered me up this morning! x
I've had the odd gray hair since my twenties. I dyed it with a temporary color for many, many years. I hated doing it - every month. For my 50th birthday last year, I liberated my self, and haven't gone back. I'm mostly gray, keep it very short, and just love it. I got a lot of compliments when I let it go natural last year. I think the key to having it gray is to not have a frumpy, old lady haircut.
Stay natural!
The redheads in my family never turn gray. They turn more sandy blonde.
My Ma is almost 65 & she still has her strawberry blonde hair with a blend of sandy blonde. Everything thinks she's 10 years younger just because of her hair.
wooo a Mallen streak pretty distinguished Id say :-)
Although I have highlights in mine to hide the 'blonder' ones.
You still look lovely
hugs
Janetxx
I think that you should go w/the green hair-naked body look. Think about it.
speaking as someone with a shock of bright unbelievably natural (HA)!!! red hair...I say go with the colour in the box...keeps my blonde moments...both mentally and physically...at bay!!!
Rainbow clown, I think that is the wave of the future
I don't mind the gray as long as I've got some hair I'm happy with it.
I love the blonde cat !!. I bought a hair colour it was nice n easy and it was caramel it was a really nice shade. I think with the darker tones they always come out darker than the warmer toned ones.
Yes i think we are always trying to change hair !!My nickname at school was bush head flattering mmm!!
When I was younger my hair would turn blond every summer. I guess it was caused by the sun and everyone accused me of putting something in my hair.
I guess my blond days are over with now because my hair is starting to turn gray around the edges. Not much, but enough to be noticeable.
I think you should just let it go and see what happens.
Oh you make me laugh,Kitty!
My hair is very dark brown.
My sister is very blonde.
I always fancied being blonde but didn't have the nerve to colour it.
I remember one of the parents at school did just that.I didn't recognise her the next morning when she brought her child into my classroom...and I asked her who she was!;-)Sal
It's amazing how much of our identity is wrapped up in our hair isn't it? LOVE that photo - cracked me up!
Shaving my head when I was 18 had much the same effect on my mother.
I'm not blonde yet, but when the time comes, I think I'll just embrace it.
My hair used to be very dark brown (with that demonic blond streak I told you about) but now, alas, it's mostly gray. Right now I'm wrestling over getting it cut. I always liked long hair but for one reason or another couldn't wear it long. Well, now it's long. Like ponytail long. Everyone has commented about how much they like it. I like it. Why am I wrestling? My wife hates it. Guess I'll be getting it cut.
Ck and I had this discussion the other day. As he is now practically white ( and regularly assumed to be 10-15 years older than he is) and I (not recently though) have dyed my hair everything from pink to zebra stripes we can't seem to agree on what I will actually do when the 'blonde' hair comes calling.
If it just went white that would be triffic but the saggy, daggy salt and pepper I know waits for me has no real appeal.
As to mothers and haircuts... I walked in after helping a trainee hairdresser friend learn perms and dying one afternoon to be told I looked like an Irish Water Spaniel!! So charming my mother!
Your blond sounds suspiciously like my glitter! I have to have my glittery parting sorted every 4 weeks or so. Luckily, I'm quite tall, so most of my short friends are unaware of this problem of mine!
The thing is this: once you start colouring, it's very difficult to stop...
Call me vain... but when the day comes that my hair changes to a more mature look... I will be best friends with the hair dye companies :D
Hi Kitty, thanks for visiting me so soon after me coming back. I had a nasty experience with hair dye, it went orange, so I avoid the all over and go with the streaks.
A carrier bag on your hair should stop the dye on the pillow!!!
Hi HTGT - I think there is a lot to be said for going 'au naturelle' and I suspect one day I'll do just that. Not sure I'm ready to do it just yet though! x
Hi C.rag - I don't know whether it's the 'red' or not but those grey hairs are definitely goldy grey, rather than silver grey. x
Hi Janet. Nah - the 'group' I found was towards the back on the right side of my head. I believe the Mallen Streak was up front and very visible? Something like that would be a whole lot 'nicer'. Take care. x
Hi Mr A .. really? You do surprise me ;-) x
Hi Suzie. Ah yes, blonde moments - if I went goldy/grey I suspect I'd be prone to quite a few of those. At the moment I just call it absent mindedness :-D x
Hi Malach - thank you so much for your contribution. :-p x
Hi Ron ... LOL, that's one way of looking at it. x
Hi S Chic - This reddish brown is Nice n Easy I think. 'Bush Head' is an interesting name :-O x
Hi Mike - yep, my son's hair does that summer blondness thing too - his hair is a completely different colour in the winter. x
Hi Sal ... harumph - glad my blonde trauma made you laugh :-p I've never been blonde in my life - I just don't feel it's 'me'. Did that parent look better for her blondeness, or did it just look 'wrong'? x
Hi DMD - Yep, you're right - it's all about identity I guess. Maybe I need to be a little more flexible about my identity? x
Hi Ali .... hahahahahaha ... yep, that would have done it! That was your Sinead O'Connor moment was it? :-O x
Hi Bruce. Oh dear ... if you feel it's 'you' to have that long hair (if only for a while) it must be very hard to cut it. Would your wife change her hair because you didn't like it? Could you maybe make a compromise ... have half cut short? :-D x
Hi Trasy - ah yes, white hair can be very beautiful can't it? My grandmother had pure white hair and bright blue eyes - she was stunning. LOL at your mother's comments - mothers just tell it how it is, don't they? Your turn will come ;-) x
Hi Dragonfly - ah yes, glitter - what a lovely way to describe it. Oh that's a good point about the short friends - maybe I should invest in some higher heels? :-D x
Hi Dawn - you have the sort of hair colour which doesn't show up 'galloping blondeness' - you'll be fine. x
Hi Kaz - you're very welcome - it's good to see you back. Do you do the streaks yourself with one of those 'kits' or go and get it done?
:-O Are you saying I have to sleep with a carrier bag on my head? I'll suffocate if it slips! x
I am too lazy to bother with the colour. Besides, the Linen cupboard door still bears the stains of the last time I attempted such folly!
Now you have me confused, Kitty. When you say "smalls" you obviously mean your kids. But Douglas Fraser, in his book about being an officer in a Scottish regiment in North Africa, said he saw "women washing the family smalls in the camel tank." So I thought he must be talking about underwear. Right or wrong?
Love the pics you used..I've been dyeing my hair since I was 14, that's when I started going gray..no I'm not kidding...so I'd say if you're lucky enough that it doesn't look gray...go with it..:-)
Just go with how you feel stuff everyone else, its about being happy with yourself, having said that just make sure that you the job properly nothing looks worse than a bad dyed hair day !
Terriffic post, Kitty! Oh, but I wish I could call my grays "blonde" NO way, they are out and out gray...gak! Hence dyeing my hair for years now *SIGH* Life is too short...go get the prettiest blonde color for you and go for it! Not sure about the Lavender...Only Dame Edna could really pull that one off maybe--LOL! Do keep up posted! Happy Day ((HUGS))
blondes have more fun? rubbish! Us brunettes do!! I have a few colors that come in, from brown to red, but recently I have been going with a natural black, and it works for me. Hair color is fun stuff, so just have fun and experiement with it. The blonde coming through is just probably some mean streak working its way through...nothing to panic over. :) I do want a purple streak though. :)
Go wild! Dye your hair blond for a while. Put some green streaks in it a few weeks down the line...
xx
Don't go trying some new fashion
Don't change the color of your hair
You always have my unspoken passion
Although I might not seem to care
--by the way I'm singing bad and out of tune but you get the gist...
I love you just the way you are.
Hi Meggie ... well this is it. I make no pretence of not suffering from congenital Lazy Slut Disorder ... will that extend to my hair? x
Hi Hermit ... I STILL have no way in to your blog!!
Yes, 'smalls' does traditionally mean one's undergarments. I use it to mean my kids, but it is a play on words intended as a double entendre and to amuse.
Nice to see you. x
Hi Amy - going grey at 14? :-O Jeepers, that's early! So you're an expert in colouring - do you do it yourself or go to a salon? x
Hi Nicey - You're absolutely right - on both counts. x
Hi Tracy - gosh, is yours dyed? :-O I'd never have known that ... hmmm, I'm thinking colouring could be a feasible option? Take care. x
Hi MI. I found some quotes which made all sorts of references to blondes having fun but brunettes having brains, etc. But decided against posting them - didn't want to offend any of our blonde sisters ;-) A purple streak sounds fabulous by the way. x
Hi Elise - blonde with green streaks? Erm ... not sure that would do much for my complexion. Would Bimbo be able to do that for me? ;-) x
Hi Elaine ... Mr Billy Joel if I'm not mistaken? Thank you. x
Well now the truth is out - I knit with circular needles AND enhance my hair's natural color.
I'm sure that'll having you sleep easier tonight : )
xx
please don't use any home dye kit. I've been there and it isn't worth looking like Dot Cotton for the next six months after attempting this. Go and get highlights at a good hairdresser, kind of a blondey ash color.
what I meant was even if it is labelled semi-permanent the dye can sometimes hang around for longer leaving a 'wig' type dead color effect. You have been warned!
I'm quite disappointed you didn't try the green.
Done that with my mum tried to sneak in the back way - once with a curly perm and once with a cut that made me look like Julie Covington from Rock Follies.
And if you remember that, you're far too old to be up at this time - you should be in bed!!
What I actually came to say was thanks for visiting today!
Thanks kitty - you have given me the best laugh of the morning - your blonde hairs having a meeting!!
mmm Auburn my favorite hair colour you ravishing beauty...:))))))
I've seen many people with grey hair that looks great! I think it just matters what YOU like. Does it bother you enough to color it? I haven't found any greys yet, just tons of new wrinkles every day:(
I try to keep mine highlighted so I don't have to see what funky color my hair is changing to.
Hi WMK - Aha! No wonder you're so flippin' talented ... supersonic needles AND chemicals!
Thank you for telling me - I did indeed sleep much better for knowing. :-p x
Hi Emma ... you'll be pleased to know you have won this week's award for the most comments left by a single reader :-p (Yes folks, the deleted one was Emma's ;-) )
I'm a bit worried about having dead wig syndrome now - or looking like Dot Cotton :-O x
Hi TMOTL and welcome. I'm afraid I do remember Julie Covington, although obviously I was in the womb as I watched Rock Follies (Rula Lenska's finest hour, no?) Thanks for dropping by. :-) x
Hi Jodie - always pleased to exercise your titter muscle ;-) x
Hi Robert - I might have a face like the back end of a bus, surrounded by auburn hair for all you know, young man :-p I still like the compliments though - keep 'em coming ;-) x
Hi Maria ... you have blonde hair so I doubt you're going to see any grey hairs until they're significant in number. And I don't believe you about the wrinkles either! x
Hi PP - Well you're blonde too, so you won't see those grey hairs having their meetings of uprising. Maybe highlighting is the way to go? I'll talk to my hairdresser I think. x
I love women who change their hair colour and experiment, it looks so cool! My wife has had a couple of changes and it always keeps her look fresh! So go on Kitty, try out some new colours this year!
I'm ginger and apparently, the greyer I get, the blonder I'll appear. So I'm hoping to rock the Michael Caine/Robert Redford thing in a couple of years.
Loved the "blonde"kitty, and so love Dame Edna. Was ginger myslef when I was young...now its from a bottle...er..from the hair fairy.
I once dyed my hair and it went orange - very scary!
I've been finding those blonde hairs too lately!
I have been very impressed with the effect of highlights in masking grey - I did lowlights but they just made it more obvious so this time I went deliberately lighter. Marvellous stuff!
hi are those wigs or something theyve got on ???
Hi Steve - Well thank you for the encouragement ... I think I'll play safe to start with, but if I like the results, hell, I might try something outrageous?! x
Hi Roland - oh yes, you'll end up very Michael Caine (especially as you already have the specs). Not a lot of people know that. :-p x
Hi Colleen - Dame Edna has great wit doesn't 'she'? I laugh at Sir Les Patterson too - although in between laughs there are plenty of 'Eeeewwwwwww's. Have you got the number of that hair fairy? Thanks ;-) x
Hi Lazylol - Orange hair? Did you look like Ronald McDonald? :-O Sorry to hear about your blonde hairs - they're not good, are they? :-( x
Hi Dotty - yes, you're not the first to mention going 'lighter' to compliment the gre... erm, blonder tones. I shall bear it in mind - thank you! x
Hello YB - welcome. Erm ... yes, my guess would be that they are indeed wigs. Thanks for dropping by. :-)
I'm all for trying it all. Go through the rainbow. don't even talk about (shhh grey) Its just a design flaw young lady. x
