Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo Kitchen

My friend Janet said recently how much she enjoyed the films I've posted of our hamster family member, so I've made a new one. This was taken last Friday. As you might be able to tell, he is growing at an astonishing rate, and becoming much more tame as he's learning that nine times out of ten a cuddle = food. Anyway, here he is - having come out of his new little house to say hello:-

video

You might think, from that innocent piece of film, that all is going swimmingly in Herbie's world ... but you'd be wrong. Very wrong. The night that film was taken turned out to be an eventful one for young Herbie.

Are you sitting comfortably? Good, then I'll begin ... I went to bed as per usual, having fed him, fed the cat, etc. I read for a short while and then dozed off. It was a good night's sleep - I didn't wake up until gone 8am (the smalls were with HWNLR) - and had a nice shower before going downstairs. I must admit I thought it odd that Georgie cat wasn't snuggled up to me on the bed when I woke up. She's usually purring loudly in my ear, whispering the sort of feline sweet nothings which roughly translate as 'get up you lazy bag, I need feeding'. I had called her whilst I was enjoying my post sleep laze in the cozy warmth of the duvet, but nothing doing - I assumed she was snoozing on a different bed and couldn't be arsed to get up.

Anyway, freshly showered, I wandered downstairs, and at the bottom of the stairs I found Herbie's water bottle on the floor. *Cue dramatic music ... dum dum duuuuuuuuh* I glanced at his cage and saw this opening where there should have been his water bottle:

I quickly opened the cage and lifted the roof off his house ... no Herbie. It was at this moment that my stomach hit my knees and I realised that both Herbie AND Georgie were missing. *Gulp*. I wandered into the sitting room: no sign of critters. Dining room: no sign of critters. Kitchen: Ah. It was dim but I thought I could make out a titchy 'blob' near the back door, with a larger cat-shaped blob in attendance. Oh God.

I switched the light on, and as the flickering flourescent bulb finally stilled itself, I could see Herbie running towards me for all he was worth, little hamster legs going like mad. He was alive - phew. I scooped him up and gathered him to my bosom, trying to instil calm into his pounding rodentia cricetidae heart. He was very still. I could find no blood, so I quickly put him back in his house, making sure to secure the escape hatch water bottle hole.

I returned to the kitchen to find Georgie with a 'whoops, caught in the act' expression on her face. I've never seen a cat blush before - but she was definitely blushing. Thank God she's a rubbish hunter. Thank God she is a friendly sort of cat; one who seeks friendship and amusement from other animals, rather than confrontation and gore. I know without a doubt that our last cat, given the same 'window of opportunity', would have killed Herbie. I muttered some words of disapproval at Georgie at which she guiltily slunk off, spending the day sleeping on the sofa.

I rang the kids to tell them what had happened - if I'm honest I thought Herbie would probably die of the shock at some point during the day, and I wanted them to be prepared. I kept going to check on him, and every time I lifted the roof from his house I was met with a little twitchy nose, and sleepy black eyes which said 'What? What? Sod off and leave me alone!' Usually he turns into Bionic Herbie at around 9.30pm every evening, but on Saturday evening he didn't. I couldn't go to sleep until he'd come out of his house and had something to eat - which he eventually did just before midnight.

Yesterday afternoon I went out to the hall to put my coat on for the school run, and this is what I saw:

Hmmmm, what do you think dear reader? Friends or foe?

At the time of writing Herbie's still with us. I have examined him closely and he does seem to have a tiny wound on his left side. I'll never know whether it was caused by Georgie, or when he fell from his cage (it is a good metre/yard off the floor). I'll never know whether he was out all night, or for only a short time. I'm just so relieved he seems to be ok. Cats are supposed to have nine lives - how many do you think a hamster gets?

Rodents have short memories. I once saw some infant rats in a cage who'd had their tails bitten off and their ears shredded by a marauding cat. They were carrying on as normal. A cat is guilty by definition with small creatures. Maybe you should put a blanket over the cage at night. Or keep it in your bedroom.

I'm feeling all traumatised now! Might have to go and do some therapeutic chocolate eating to get over it! Glad Herbie is still okay - could the bottle come off again though? Did the cat help remove it? Lucy x

P.S. Your applique pictures keep appearing as I type this - they are so damn good! I'm jealous!

Hi love the name Herbie , love the video too. They are so cute, my little boy has a hampster called Stuart! after Stuart Little!. Father Christmas brought it too our house( Stuart is a girl though!). I bet that shocked you as well as Herbie. Glad he is safe

Poor herbie !!!I think a cover might be a good idea so Pussy cat can't be tempted !

Kitty said...

Hi Mr Bananas. Yes, I'm hoping that Herbie's pea brain can't remember the trauma. Normally Georgie is shut in downstairs at night - just not when the kids aren't here. In future she always will be. x

Hi Lucy. No, the bottle can't come off - I have taped it securely to the cage now and will only remove it to refill it - then retape. Enjoy your chocolate!

Awww, thanks for the appliqué comment. :-D x

Hello Shabby Chic - welcome to the Bloggy Bits. Stuart is a great name for a hamster! I'll be over to visit your blog later. Thanks for dropping by. :-)

Hi Jodie. As I said up there ^ I will make sure Georgie is shut firmly in at night in future. Don't want a repeat performance! Take care. x

If it's any consolation the Moog wears just the same intent expression on her ears when the gerbils are out for a cuddle!
Glad to hear Herbie survived his encounter with Georgie and I love his video :)

It does happen. My daughter had gerbils and somehow our cat got the top off the cage and destroyed them all.

We still refer to that as the day of The Great Gerbil Massacre.

You should make sure Herbie's cage is very secure!

I think hamsters are extremely lucky!

Cats are clever animals... I have to be careful about leaving a jumper around, forget rodents!

Well Kitty, you know that I'm not a cat (or any kind of animal, really) sort of person, but that picture certainly raised a titter from me, and I definitely like a bit of a titter now and then. I think it looks as though Georgie is nursing a desperate and unrequited love for Herbie. Either that or she's thinking with her stomach. xxxx

Oh my goodness...Never a dull moment at your house, Kitty! LOL! No way to keep the cat and hampster separated is there? Good luck with all you've got going on there! ((HUGS))

Afternoon Mr A - hmmm, a dog? Nah - too much like hard work; I'll just have to keep an eye on the cat. x

Hi Janet - Herbie seems none the worse for his adventure. You can be his Auntie if you like! x

Hello Dominique - hope your little boy enjoys the video. I'll take more in the future. Thanks for dropping by. x

Hi Lesley. Hmmm, so Moog has never tried to have gerbil for tea? Lovely to see you (I thought you'd be off the poota all day today ;-) ) x

Hi Mike. I remember you saying about the Great Gerbil Massacre - very sad :-( x

Hello Elise - yes, cats are clever, and Georgie is a clever cat. I'm going to have to watch her carefully! Take care. x

Hi Cath - glad to have raised a titter. As you know, I'm all for titters ;-) Lovely to see you. xx

Hi Tracy - never a dull moment is one way of putting it! I bet Charlie gives you far less trouble. Yes, I'm going to work on keeping Georgie away from Herbie's cage. I think it's for the best. Take care. x

Oh your poor hamster!! I'd say definately that's a cat with an mmmm dinner look on her face. I hope he's still with you!!

I'd say they have several lives. Our old Charlie Hamster certainly did and lived til he was about 40. Ok so maybe a slight exaggeration but he was dropped (and bounced) and used to escape frequently and wedge himself under the fireplace where I'd have to smack him out with a wooden spoon otherwise he wouldnt move. He didnt really like me, not sure why....

I can sympathise with the trauma of a missing hamster with cats around though ..

I do like the name Herbie :o) x

Hi Kitty,
Phew, thank goodness Herbie survived, although the whole post made me laugh (It's the way you tell 'em).
Having owned cats, a hamster and gerbils over the years I know exactly what you have been through. Lets hope Herbie has nine lives too!
Take care,
Sandi x

Hi Kaz - I don't think the hamster remembers it. He's acting the same way he used to - if Georgie comes near him he sits up and looks at her. Doesn't seem in the least bit worried - silly critter. x

Hi Suzy - Ha! Just read through your old post. You sound so fond of Charlie - bless ;-) I'm so relieved to hear he was dropped, etc. and survived. I had no idea owning a hamster would be this stressful! They don't come with any kind of warning label, do they? It's not on really. Take care. x

Hi Bruce. I'm not sure Georgie would really eat Herbie. She's never caught anything more exciting than a leaf or stick or worm before. She doesn't eat the worms - she just leaves them at my feet and grins proudly. x

Hi Sandi. You might have warned me hamster-owning would be this stressful! I was woefully prepared. Lovely to see you - take care. x

Gosh - I could barely read your post I was so worried what my have happened to poor Herbie. How traumatic. Hope he survives the shock!

Oh poor Herbie - glad he's OK! Our little dog always used to be quite intrigued by our hamsters too - so we moved them onto a higher counter and then one day when one was out for a play it took a big fall - and died a couple of days later. Don't want to worry you but do keep an eye on Herbie if he fell a bit of a way. I think we'll be going down the hamster route soon - eeeep!

Please don't do what 'Angryman' says - that will be the start of a slippery slope and before you know where you are some little old granny with round glasses and white hair in a bun will be visting when she is overcome be mad desire to ingest a horse.

That would be worse to clean up and explain than smooshed hamster ;-).

I'm glad the tale of Herbie and Georgie had a happy ending. My daughter had a hamster when she was a little girl. It escaped one day and though we searched high and low, we could not find it. Weeks later, it turned up alive and well in the laundry basket way down in the basement. They are sturdy little creatures.

Dawn said...

It's hard to say friend or foe...
I could trust my dog with the hamsters, guinea pig, cats.. never a problem. But outside the home she'd kill a rabbit without a second thought. I kept the hamsters on a shelf in the laundry room at night because they were so noisy. One popped his cage door and fell at some point during the night and landed in a mop bucket. The dog was standing over the bucket guarding him until I got up. He was none the worse for wear despite his fall... and thank God their was no water in the bucket!

That is one lucky hamster. :)

That is very cute and so funny. We used to have a cat that looked just like "Georgie" her name is "Ernie". Ernie got mad at us when we got a dog "duchess" and decided she'd rather live with our neighbor who as a boy cat. She does still come and visit us though.

Kitty said...

Hi Gina. Oooh, did I write a short story? :-O So far so good - he is still with us, and seems perfectly ok. x

Hi Dotty. Awww, I'm sorry to hear about your hamster :-( So far Herbie seems ok - and this is 5 days on from his trauma, so fingers crossed. Yay! Glad to hear you might be getting a hamster - can't wait to see the pictures! x

Hello Trashy ( :-p ) - No, I don't think we'll be getting a dog. They need walking don't they? And the weather here isn't conducive to walking, unless one has webbed feet. Take care. x

Hi Mr Hermit. I remember you mentioning your hamster saga - wonder what he'd been eating and drinking for all that time? :-O x

Hi Dawn - had to smile at your hamster story. They are wriggly little things aren't they? I've come down this morning to find Herbie has taken the roof off his house :-O Take care. x

Hello Ron - yep, isn't he just? x

Hi Amy - I laughed at Ernie getting her nose put out of joint and moving out! I have a friend whose cat did the same when she moved home - she didn't move far, but he went back to live with the new people at his old 'place'. Animals are funny, aren't they? x

Hmmmm .... looks like I may have been wrong to give Georgie the benefit of the doubt last time ....

Hi Dragonfly - I interpret snorts as something positive - so glad to have helped you have some :-D Thanks for dropping by. x

Hi Suzie - I must admit I was a bit worried when I realised they were both missing, but *touch wood* he seems fine. x

Evening MM - Georgie didn't hurt him though did she? She could have tossed him around and gobbled him up. She didn't. I'm trying to convince myself ... am I doing a good job? :-p x

What an amazing adventure for the little fella!

Our old hamster used to climb out of his cage EVER night and for some reason, always climbed into bed with us.

It was very weird.

aaah he's just a kid.. he'll get over it all kids have an adventure or two..or three or maybe 8...he survived the first one..just like the first time you go over the handle bars on your bike...:):)

Kitty said...

Hello Roland - welcome to the Bloggy Bits. Never heard of a hamster climbing into bed with people before! Not sure Herbie could climb the stairs, but should I ever feel a wriggly rodent under the covers, I'll bear your story in mind :-O

I'll be over to check out your blog soon. Thanks for dropping by. :-)

Hi Robert - yep, maybe that's it: the adventurous leanings of youth. And how did you know about me and the handlebars? :-O x

Hi PP - yep, me too! x

Hi HTGT - I have to say he seems none the worse for the whole experience - he's just the same curious little chap he was before. x

Hi Sal - latest update is that he's in bed, having eaten a hearty supper last night, and having spent many hours on his wheel! x

Lord ! Lucky escape I'd say. Not sure how many lives Hammies have but I wouldn't risk it.
My neice dropped hers last month and we were all waiting for the poor little thing to die of shock. He was OK but another shock like a 4ft drop might finish him off.

I think 'cat' has 'hamster' marked off as lunch looking at the photo ... Oh dear ...

Kitty said...

Hi Tillyboo - I didn't realise hamsters had such 'bounceability' - I was sure he would have a heart attack - but no ... two weeks on and he seems fine. x
